The Opportunity

Our client is a specialized trading company focusing on raw materials and commodities crucial to international supply chains. They excel in the merchandising and logistics of a diverse portfolio, including ferrous and non-ferrous, stainless steel, minerals and energy-related products. Leveraging the immerse strength and network in almost 100 countries, the company provides reliable, end-to-end solutions for producers and consumers worldwide. Based in Singapore, it plays a key role in connecting resources from emerging markets to industrial centers across the globe. They are currently seeking a General Manager, Business Development to join them in Singapore.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and drive the trading strategy for Fertilizers and Bauxite, including risk appetite, product scope, target counterparties, and physical trade routes, ensuring clear execution parameters.
  • Lead negotiations and conclude physical trade contracts with enforceable terms, covering specifications, pricing, Incoterms, payment structures, and risk transfer, while coordinating with internal divisions on structured arrangements such as prepayments or collateralised deals.
  • Own and manage all bulk trading books within delegated risk limits, maintaining accountability for pricing, counterparty credit, country and geopolitical risks, and ensuring full transparency and auditability across the trade lifecycle.
  • Provide market intelligence and commercial input to support investment decisions, project evaluations, and joint venture governance, including reviewing off-take strategies and participating in committee forums as required.
  • Act as deputy to the Head of Business Development, enforcing daily operating standards, ensuring timely escalation, and maintaining execution discipline across trading, risk, and compliance matters.
  • Build capability through hands-on deal reviews, contract assessments, and post-trade analysis, while ensuring operational resilience by reducing reliance on individual practices and leveraging regional offices for enhanced trading reach.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics or other relevant disciplines
  • Min. 12 years and above of end-to-end experience in physical bulk commodity trading, with demonstrable accountability for pricing, contracting, execution, and commercial outcomes. Prior role in marketing, sales, or business development at major resource companies is preferred
  • Proven ability to manage bulk trading books within a corporate risk framework, including adherence to limits, delegated authorities, reporting discipline, and escalation protocols.
  • Priority would lean towards those with prior in-depth experience in trading and originating Fertilizers (Phosphate, Potash, Urea etc.) and Bauxite.
  • Strong commercial judgment grounded in market reality, capable of balancing risk, return, and executability rather than focusing solely on volume or profit.
  • Experience working closely with corporate functions such as Finance, Risk, Trade Operations, and Legal to ensure controlled and auditable trade execution.
  • Familiarity in physical logistics including shipping, storage, and delivery risk sufficient to assess feasibility.
  • Exposure to structured transactions (e.g., prepayments, collateralised structures) and experience in complex or high-risk commodity environments.
