About the role

We are looking for a Traffic Operator to deliver customer service and trade operations excellence through strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills at all times in relation to the purchase and sales of a diverse range of commodities from Iron ore, Copper, Bauxite and Alumina to Aluminium in the markets that we operate in.

This role is a great opportunity to ensure clear communication channels and engagement with all internal and external bodies, including customers, port agents, logistics companies and other internal departments such as legal, tax, compliance, digital, commercial service, marine, logistics and finance to coordinate deliveries and ensure contractual obligations are met while always adhering to internal control and compliance.

This role is a six-month secondment role (extendable as required) embedded within the third-party marketing enabler workstream- third party operations to support the third-party marketing initiatives and is accountable to manage third party marketing operations for multiple products across different Business units.

Reporting on the third-party marketing operations workstream leads, you will

  • Create and optimize Contract to Cash processes to ensure efficient and effective traffic operations. This includes developing workflows, implementing best practices, and continuously improving processes to meet the evolving needs of the organization.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers on operational execution, addressing their key concerns, and identifying opportunities to deliver and extract value. Understand the customer's needs and respond to all customer enquiries/ requests in a timely and effective manner. This involves maintaining good relationships with customers and ensuring their satisfaction with the services provided.
  • Assist with implementing customer solutions that create value for Rio Tinto and for our customers and that complement Rio Tinto's operations or future third party marketing development opportunities.
  • Execute the third-party marketing trades, ensuring that all transactions are carried out accurately and efficiently. This includes coordinating with various departments and external parties (Surveyors, port agents) to ensure smooth trade execution.
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships, both internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to Commercial, Legal, Tax, Compliance, Digital, Marine, Logistics, Commercial Services, Technical Marketing and Finance as required.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders and other third-party marketing workstreams (CTRM, RGU) to ensure that all trade activities are aligned with the organization's third-party marketing goals and policies.
  • Ensuring that all trade activities comply with relevant regulations and internal policies is crucial. This also involves identifying, escalating and mitigating any risks associated with trading operational activities promptly and effectively.
  • Maintaining accurate records of all trade transactions and preparing necessary reports for internal and external stakeholders. This includes ensuring that all documentation is complete and compliant with regulatory requirements.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Bachelor's Degree qualification. Prior trade operations background in trading houses will be beneficial.
  • Excellent communication both written and spoken English, additional language advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills to manage real-time coordination across multiple stakeholders and communicate with clarity and precision to ensure smooth execution, avoiding miscommunication between stakeholders.
  • Commitment to always delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Manage customer expectations through negotiations and resolving issues.
  • Ability to operate effectively, accurately, and independently under pressure in a multi-tasking highly dynamic, complex and fast paced business environment with competing demands.
  • Strong time management and analytical skills and ability to manage deliverables and stakeholders whilst maintaining autonomy and self-motivation.
  • Deep knowledge base. acquired through experience with trade lifecycle, customs and regulatory compliance, trade practices and documentation, and commodity-specific trade practices, risk and insurance management.
  • Strong grasp of ERP and trade management systems (SAP, CTRM) to manage data entry and reporting, while coordinating warehousing, transloading, and international logistics across a global network of service providers. Good Proficient use of Excel and Power BI.
  • Strong commercial acumen with a good understanding of the business environment, market awareness and regulatory compliance.
  • Quick problem solving with strong attention to operational details.
  • Deep Knowledge Base includes Trade lifecycle (e.g. incoterms, chartering and freight operations, port operations and laytime), Customs and regulatory compliance (e.g. import/ export regulations, sanctions, compliance, HS code), Trade practices and documentation (Letter of credit- UCP600 and ISBP, documentation digitalization electronic documents, letter of indemnity), Commodity-specific (e.g. WSMD, product specifications, inspection, trade life cycle), Risk and Insurance management (identify and manage operational risks, cargo and marine insurance).
