Technical SME (AS400)

Job Description & Requirements

.We are seeking an experienced AS400 Technical SME with deep expertise in IBM i (AS/400 / iSeries) systems to lead design, development, modernization, and support of critical enterprise applications. The ideal candidate will act as a technical authority, drive system improvements, and support business-critical operations.

Key Responsibilities:

.Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for AS400 / IBM i platform.

.Provide technical guidance and mentoring to development and support teams.

.Define best practices, coding standards, and architecture guidelines.

.Design, develop, and maintain applications using: RPG (RPG III / RPG IV / RPGLE / Free RPG) / CL / CLLE / DB2/400 (DB2 for i)

.Analyze business requirements and translate into technical solutions.

.Perform code reviews and ensure quality standards.

.Troubleshoot production issues and provide timely resolutions.

.Perform root cause analysis and implement preventive measures.

.Manage batch jobs, job scheduling, and system performance tuning.

.Lead modernization initiatives (e.g., RPG to Free-format RPG, API enablement).

.Integrate AS400 applications with modern systems using: REST APIs / Web Services / Middleware tools

.Support migration or transformation initiatives (cloud / hybrid setups).

.Work closely with business users, architects, and cross-functional teams.

.Participate in requirement discussions and solution design workshops.

Requirements

Technical Skills

.Hands-on experience in: RPG IV / RPGLE / Free RPG / CL Programming / DB2 for i (SQL, Query optimization)

.Experience with: IBM i (AS400 / iSeries) platform administration basics and Job control, journaling, and system utilities

.Knowledge of: APIs, Web Services, and integration patterns and Version control tools (e.g., Git)

Nice to have Skills

.Experience in AS400 modernization tools (e.g., ARCAD, Fresche)

.Exposure to DevOps practices on IBM i

.Familiarity with banking / finance domain (if applicable)
