System Engineer (Level 1) is mainly responsible for:
- Keeping systems running smoothly
- Monitoring and responding to issues
- Troubleshooting and resolving incidents
- Performing routine maintenance
- Escalating complex issues when needed
- Supporting changes, patching, and operational improvements
- System Operations and Support
- Monitor and maintain servers, operating systems, and infrastructure components.
- Perform routine health checks and ensure systems are available and performing as expected.
- Respond to incidents, troubleshoot issues, and restore services within agreed service levels.
- Support production, test, and development environments where required.
- Installation, Configuration, and Maintenance
- Install, configure, and upgrade hardware, operating systems, middleware, and related software.
- Apply patches, fixes, and security updates in line with approved change processes.
- Maintain system configurations and ensure they are aligned with operational standards.
- Incident and Problem Management
- Investigate system alerts, incidents, and recurring issues.
- Perform root cause analysis for major or repeated failures.
- Work with internal teams, partners, and application owners to resolve technical issues.
- Document resolutions and contribute to knowledge sharing.
- Change and Release Support
- Support planned changes, deployments, and release activities.
- Assess technical impact and implementation requirements for infrastructure changes.
- Participate in maintenance windows and ensure proper rollback and recovery planning.
- Performance and Capacity Management
- Track system performance, utilisation, and availability.
- Recommend improvements to optimise reliability, capacity, and efficiency.
- Support system tuning and resource planning based on usage trends.
- Security and Compliance Support
- Implement and support security controls for managed systems.
- Ensure systems comply with internal policies, baselines, and audit requirements.
- Support vulnerability remediation and access control management.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain up-to-date technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and asset/configuration records.
- Prepare operational reports, incident summaries, and service updates as needed.
- Ensure handover documentation is complete for support continuity.
- Collaboration and Stakeholder Support
- Work closely with project managers, application teams, service delivery teams, and clients.
- Provide technical input during project implementation and transition to operations.
- Escalate risks, issues, and dependencies appropriately.
- Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to automate routine tasks and improve operational processes.
- Suggest enhancements to system stability, monitoring, and support practices.
- Participate in service reviews and improvement initiatives.
