The Role
This role can be based either in Singapore or Sydney.
As a Senior Underwriting Developer, Protection you will be working closely with the AVP, Global Underwriting & Claims Development, Protection to support a 12-month project to update our underwriting manual Ocean, with a particular focus on developing protection underwriting philosophy.
As a Senior Underwriting Developer, you will develop and implement an underwriting proposition that meets both client needs and is consistent with PL Re's strategic focus, including the development of risk‑based underwriting frameworks suitable for automation.

Duties
Ocean Development (80-90%)
- Develop, review, and update medical research‑based loading (RBL) papers for Protection products, translating clinical evidence into clear, defensible underwriting positions suitable for Ocean.
- Conduct structured medical literature reviews, including epidemiology, prognosis, treatment advances, and outcomes relevant to Life, CI, TPD, and IP underwriting.
- Synthesise medical evidence into concise, well‑structured content aligned to existing underwriting philosophy and Ocean standards.
- Support prioritised Ocean Protection content refresh activity in line with agreed delivery plans and timelines.
- Work closely with the AVP and existing Development Team members to ensure consistency, clarity, and quality across Protection content.
- Respond to technical queries arising from Protection content reviews, clarifying medical rationale and assumptions as required.
Collaboration and Delivery Support (10-20%)
- Collaborate with underwriting developers, medical SMEs, and Ocean stakeholders to ensure medical content is fit for purpose and implementation‑ready.
- Support peer review processes for Protection medical content updates.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing within the Development Team to support consistent medical interpretation and application.
Essential Experience
- Strong medical research background, with proven experience reviewing, analysing, and interpreting clinical and epidemiological evidence.
- Experience translating complex medical research into practical decision‑making guidance.
- Familiarity with life insurance or reinsurance medical underwriting concepts, particularly for Protection products (Life, CI, TPD, IP).
- High attention to detail with the ability to produce clear, well‑structured written content.
- Comfortable working to defined priorities and timelines in a delivery‑focused environment.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to explain medical concepts clearly to non‑medical stakeholders.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience contributing to underwriting manuals, rules, or automated underwriting content.
- Experience working with or supporting expert rule‑based underwriting systems (e.g. Ocean or similar platforms).
- Background in insurance, reinsurance, or health risk assessment environments.
- Experience working on time‑bound remediation or backlog‑reduction programmes.
