Project Manager - Marine Industry

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Project Manager to oversee and manage marine projects from contract award through to successful completion.

The successful candidate will take overall responsibility for project execution, including planning, engineering coordination, procurement, installation, commissioning, commercial management, customer communication, and project close-out.

You will work closely with shipowners, vessel operators, shipyards, marine contractors, suppliers, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with contractual and technical requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management

• Take overall responsibility for the planning, execution, monitoring, and completion of assigned marine projects.
• Develop detailed project plans, schedules, budgets, milestones, and resource requirements.
• Establish project objectives, deliverables, timelines, and key performance indicators.
• Monitor project progress against agreed schedules, costs, quality requirements, and contractual obligations.
• Identify project risks, technical challenges, delays, and potential cost overruns, and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
• Lead project meetings and provide regular progress updates to management and customers.
• Ensure projects are properly documented from project commencement through final handover and close-out.

Customer & Stakeholder Management

• Act as the primary point of contact for customers throughout the project lifecycle.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with shipowners, ship managers, vessel operators, shipyards, offshore contractors, and other stakeholders.
• Understand customer requirements and ensure project deliverables meet agreed expectations.
• Manage customer meetings, technical discussions, progress reviews, and project updates.
• Handle customer concerns, escalations, variations, and changes to project requirements.
• Identify opportunities for additional works, upgrades, or future projects where appropriate.

Engineering & Technical Coordination

• Coordinate closely with engineering teams to ensure project designs and technical solutions meet customer and regulatory requirements.
• Review technical specifications, drawings, calculations, method statements, and other project documentation.
• Coordinate engineering changes and resolve technical issues that arise during project execution.
• Support and oversee installation, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and sea trials where required.
• Ensure projects comply with relevant marine standards, classification society requirements, flag-state regulations, and applicable legislation.

Procurement & Vendor Management

• Coordinate with procurement teams to ensure equipment, materials, and services are sourced and delivered according to project requirements.
• Manage suppliers, subcontractors, service providers, and third-party contractors.
• Monitor supplier and subcontractor performance, delivery schedules, quality, and costs.
• Review technical and commercial quotations where required.
• Ensure long-lead items are identified and proactively managed to avoid project delays.

Commercial & Contract Management

• Monitor project budgets, costs, cash flow, and financial performance.
• Manage project variations, change orders, claims, and additional works.
• Review contractual requirements and ensure project execution remains aligned with agreed commercial terms.
• Work closely with commercial and finance teams on invoicing, payment milestones, cost control, and project profitability.
• Identify and manage commercial risks throughout the project lifecycle.

Installation & Commissioning

• Coordinate site activities, vessel attendance, shipyard works, installation, testing, and commissioning.
• Ensure project activities are properly planned and coordinated with vessel schedules and shipyard timelines.
• Support troubleshooting and resolution of technical or operational issues during commissioning.
• Coordinate Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), harbour acceptance tests, and sea trials where applicable.
• Ensure final project handover is completed with all required documentation.

Team Leadership

• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams comprising engineers, technicians, procurement, commercial, service, and subcontractor personnel.
• Allocate resources according to project requirements and priorities.
• Provide direction and support to project team members.
• Promote effective communication and collaboration across departments.
• Ensure project teams maintain high standards of safety, quality, and professionalism.

Requirements

• Diploma or Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related engineering discipline.
• 5-10 years of relevant experience in project management within the marine, offshore, shipyard, vessel, or marine equipment industry.
• Proven experience managing marine projects from contract award through completion.
• Strong understanding of marine engineering systems, equipment, installation, commissioning, and vessel operations.
• Experience managing customers, suppliers, subcontractors, and multiple internal stakeholders.
• Strong commercial awareness with experience in project costing, variations, claims, and budget management.
• Familiarity with marine classification societies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Strong project planning, organisational, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
• Willingness to travel locally and internationally and attend vessels, shipyards, or offshore locations when required.
