LNG Technical Superintendent

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the day-to-day technical operations and performance of assigned LNG vessels.
• Monitor machinery reliability, operational efficiency and technical KPIs.
• Oversee main propulsion systems, dual-fuel engines, LNG cargo handling systems, BOG systems, cargo containment systems, electrical and automation systems.
• Manage LNG cargo systems including cargo pumps, spray pumps, compressors, vapourisers, reliquefaction systems and sub-coolers.
• Support gas trials, cool-down, gassing-up and inerting operations.
• Ensure effective implementation of Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS) and condition-based maintenance programmes.
• Ensure compliance with class, statutory and manufacturer maintenance requirements.
• Plan and manage dry dockings, repairs and major conversion projects, including specifications, budgets, tenders and project schedules.
• Manage annual technical budgets, OPEX, technical purchases, repair quotations and spare-parts requirements.
• Ensure compliance with applicable IMO regulations, including SOLAS, MARPOL, IGF Code, IGC Code and ISM Code, together with class, flag-state and port-state requirements.
• Support vessel inspections, audits and statutory/class surveys.
• Participate in incident investigations and root-cause analysis involving machinery failures, LNG cargo systems, gas detection alarms and technical breakdowns.
• Monitor LNG operational risks and ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
• Support environmental and decarbonisation requirements including EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime, CII, EEXI and SEEMP.
• Liaise with classification societies, shipyards, equipment manufacturers, service engineers, flag administrations, charterers and terminal operators.
• Provide technical support and guidance to Chief Engineers, Second Engineers and Electro-Technical Officers.
• Support crew evaluation, selection and LNG-specific technical competency development.

Newbuilding & Project Responsibilities

• Act as the owner's representative for assigned LNG newbuilding projects from contract signing through vessel delivery.
• Lead and manage shipyard site supervision teams covering hull, machinery, electrical/automation, LNG cargo systems and commissioning.
• Monitor shipyard progress, quality, safety, contractual compliance and delivery milestones.
• Review technical drawings, specifications and vendor documentation.
• Participate in design reviews and ensure owner requirements are incorporated.
• Oversee installation, testing, commissioning and acceptance of LNG cargo containment, dual-fuel propulsion, cargo handling, reliquefaction, automation/control and environmental systems.
• Coordinate FAT, HAT and Sea Acceptance Trials (SAT).
• Track and resolve technical deficiencies, non-conformities and warranty issues.
• Coordinate crew familiarisation, operational readiness and vessel handover.
• Manage post-delivery warranty claims and guarantee surveys.
• Provide project status reports covering progress, risks, budget, quality and technical issues.

Requirements

• Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture.
• Minimum 5-10 years of sailing experience on LNG carriers.
• Previous experience as a Chief Engineer on LNG vessels or LNG Technical Superintendent.
• Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of LNG cargo systems, dual-fuel propulsion, BOG systems, cargo containment and marine machinery.
• Experience in vessel technical management, dry docking, shipyard supervision and/or LNG newbuilding projects.
• Strong understanding of class, flag-state, statutory and IMO requirements.
• Good stakeholder management, communication, troubleshooting and project coordination skills.
