Job Description

The Line Manager is responsible for the overall Profit & Loss (P&L) performance of assigned trade routes, focusing on cost optimisation, revenue growth, and service reliability. The role requires strong commercial, operational, and strategic capabilities to manage trade performance and respond effectively to market conditions.

Responsibilities

Cost Management & Operations

  • Select and deploy vessels based on optimal capacity, fuel efficiency, and port limitations.
  • Monitor vessel speed and bunker consumption to ensure compliance with charter terms.
  • Secure berth windows and negotiate terminal agreements, including cost incentives.
  • Manage operational claims (cargo, container, vessel) with relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain high schedule integrity and provide accurate vessel updates (ETA/ETD).

Trade & Capacity Management

  • Analyse market demand and supply to optimise trade routes and capacity planning.
  • Collaborate with commercial teams to forecast cargo demand and allocate slots effectively.
  • Monitor competitor activity and market conditions to guide pricing and utilisation strategies.
  • Improve service offerings through route adjustments, increased frequency, or partnerships (e.g. slot exchanges).

Revenue & Commercial Performance

  • Maximise revenue through effective cargo mix and space utilisation (NTV optimisation).
  • Support pricing strategies, including General Rate Increases (GRI), Rate Restorations (RR), and Bunker Recovery adjustments.
  • Participate in customer tenders and support contract negotiations.
  • Oversee rate quotations and ensure accurate execution with internal teams.

Stakeholder Management

  • Manage relationships with agents, port operators, terminals, and key customers.
  • Coordinate closely with internal departments (sales, operations, finance, legal, customer service).
  • Handle customer communications during operational disruptions and support key accounts.

Business Development

  • Review performance of existing trade routes and implement improvements.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for new services, including potential partnerships or consortium arrangements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in shipping, preferably in liner or trade management.
  • Strong understanding of vessel operations, trade dynamics, and market trends.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Self-driven, results-oriented, and able to work independently.
  • Willing to travel and work beyond standard hours when required.
