Job Duties and Responsibilities
Cabling & Termination
- Support and complete all scheduled data center Moves/Adds/Changes (MACs).
- Perform hardware installation MACs, including device labeling, power, and network cable connectivity.
- Complete hardware support work orders involving MACs, certification, troubleshooting, and break-fix.
- Manage assets, auditing, and daily work log/ticket tracking.
- Provide smart-hands assistance within specified SLA response times (on-call duties may apply).
- Maintain a safe and secure operating environment and report violations.
- Maintain detailed documentation and record keeping.
- Follow site security protocols, badging requirements, and data protection procedures.
- Ensure proper logging, securing, and documentation of media storage devices.
- Use network hardware/components, copper and fiber infrastructure installation and testing tools, and datacenter infrastructure management (DCIM) tools.
- Coordinate equipment/material receiving, shipping, and RMA processing.
- Provide vendor and security escorts as needed.
- Perform general cleaning of floor, cabinet/rack surfaces, work benches, and other areas regularly.
- Support standard and emergency operating procedures for the data center.
- Provide status reporting on service availability, performance, and capacity utilization.
- Conduct daily error log reporting and physical inspections for general health, power, cooling, and hazards.
- Coordinate equipment installation and delivery schedules per project plans.
- Perform on-call duties as needed.
Fiber Technician Specific Duties
- Basic copper termination skills required.
- Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and grounding.
- Perform testing: continuity tests, use of volt-ohmmeter, troubleshoot cable issues, and use tone sets.
- Install various fiber connectors (LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, MPO/MTP) for multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
- Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cords, breakout outside plant fiber, and indoor tight buffered fiber.
- Install fan-out kits including buffer tubes.
- Calculate end-to-end loss budgets per TIA/EIA standards.
- Complete paperwork accurately and timely (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers).
- Perform testing using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO.
- Troubleshoot network issues using OTDR.
- Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all fiber cable types.
- Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices
