Position Overview:

The Assistant Vice President, Legal, will provide legal assistance to the IUS group on projects (including cross-border transactions), Industrial Park and other industrial and commercial development, regulatory compliance, and related joint ventures in Asia (focused on Vietnam, Indonesia, and China) to our water resource management business units. The role will also involve providing support to other members of the Sembcorp Urban legal team with regards to Industrial Park and other commercial, industrial and residential property projects. As a key member of the legal team, the Assistant Vice President, Legal will ensure business integrity while empowering growth through innovative and commercially grounded legal strategies that align with Sembcorp's purpose to drive energy transition and urban transformation.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Working with Head of legal, Sembcorp Urban and the existing IUS and Sembcorp legal teams to shape and execute legal strategy to support IUS's growth across Asia (including Vietnam, Indonesia, and China).
  • Provide legal oversight on large-scale land development and cross-border investments.
  • Lead negotiations for joint ventures, land acquisitions, infrastructure development, and commercial agreements.
  • Oversee due diligence and risk assessments for strategic partnerships and new investments.
  • Advise senior leadership on legislative developments and emerging legal risks.
  • Advising on joint venture matters (including JV governance).
  • Liaising with external counsel, regulators, and other stakeholders to ensure the Company's legal and regulatory obligations are met.
  • (As required) advising on interactions with government authorities and regulators to support development approvals and policy alignment.
  • Liaise with business units on governance and compliance related matters in respect of frameworks and policies initiated by the Sembcorp Group Legal and Group Ethics & Compliance function (including anti-bribery and anti-corruption and Anti Money Laundering policies) supporting the rollout of these policies (including assistance with training) and implement and monitor compliance on such policies and frameworks.
  • Assistance with periodic risk reporting in respect identified key legal risk

Qualification, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Laws (or equivalent) and admitted as a lawyer in Singapore or England and Wales.
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant legal working experience with corporate commercial or projects experience.
  • Experience working in the real estate industry or on infrastructure projects in the water resource management industry (or related industry) and working with an international multi-national company would be an advantage.
  • Experience with projects in Indonesia, Vietnam or India and/or ability to speak Bahasa Indonesia or Vietnamese would be an advantage.
  • Experience managing a team will be an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken)
  • Good knowledge of commercial law.
  • Willing to step up beyond strictly legal matters and offer practical solutions.
  • Willing to travel when required.
