Job Purpose
The successful candidate will advance the University's communications and outreach efforts, particularly for the humanities and social sciences (HSS) portfolio, by developing newsworthy stories, building media opportunities, and creating content that showcase the impact of its education, research and broader initiatives.
Job Description
The candidate will:
- Identify and develop newsworthy stories and publicity opportunities for the University's humanities and social sciences (HSS) faculties, schools and units, with the ability to translate academic ideas, research and developments into clear, compelling and publicly relevant stories that resonate with the media and wider audiences.
- Bring creativity, strong news sense and agility to identify fresh angles, tap timely trends and drive publicity outcomes beyond routine communications outputs.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with journalists, editors, social media content owners and internal stakeholders across the University.
- Keep abreast of media developments and emerging trends, and provide communications advice to stakeholders on publicity opportunities and approaches.
- Contribute to other duties, projects and publicity opportunities beyond the HSS portfolio, where required, to support UCO's broader communications goals and objectives.
Requirements
- Degree in communications, journalism, marketing and branding or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in media relations, public relations, journalism or strategic communications. Experience in multimedia storytelling or content creation across platforms will be an advantage.
- Curious, enterprising and creative mindset, with enthusiasm for trying new approaches, spotting opportunities and delivering strong publicity outcomes.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English, with strong writing, editing and content development skills.
- Strong news sense, resourcefulness and the ability to identify and develop story angles that resonate with different audiences.
The ideal candidate should be a self-starter and enjoy contributing as a team. The candidate should be proactive, organised, meticulous, able to multitask and posses good time management skills.
