Job Description
The purpose of this position is to provide veterinary care and service for all laboratory animals and related service covered under NUS animal care and use program. This includes all procedures in Comparative Medicine (CM) animal facilities and other area where research/ teaching/ training with animal are conducted within NUS. The duties and assignment also includes coverage after hours, weekend, and holiday (through service for researcher or veterinary care purpose when applicable, primarily for emergency). Job coverage to assist and/ or with the clinical veterinarians in day-to-day activities in veterinary care program; as well as providing service to researcher in experimental/ workshop procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Preventive medicine and health monitoring for existing colony, newly arrived/ quarantined animal. This would include blood / sample collection for health monitoring.
- Perform daily health checks on all species housed and cared by the CM/ NUS animal care and use program.
- Attending clinical case observed or reported
- Assist in medical treatments, care, monitoring and record keeping.
- Assist in veterinary procedures, including but not limited to surgery, non-surgery; anaesthesia, monitoring; diagnostic procedure, sample collection, imaging, and necropsy, and laboratory analysis.
- Maintenance of inventory (Vet care consumables)/medical records/i import/ export.
- Operate CM pharmacy service.
- Provide support in service and/ or training on animal procedures and techniques to care staff and researcher, include directly teach and/ or assist in the hands-on training programs for animal users.
- Provide support for animal experimental procedures for research and workshops. Including but not limited to surgery, non-surgery; anaesthesia, monitoring; substance administration, sample collection, imaging, or necropsy.
- Provide critical support for large animal research and imaging. In some cases they conduct the actual surgical research procedures
- Operate the C-arm/ Fluoroscopy/ x-ray equipment, and cardiac bypass equipment, when applicable (for diagnostic or experiment)
- Involve in transportation of non-rodents animal (within or outside CM/ NUS campus)
- Maintaining activities in CM Diagnostic Laboratory including conducting sample analysis, inventory, sample storing, report database.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Bioscience, Biotechnology or equivalent discipline
- Must have skill/ ability in performing basic/ veterinary technical procedure in animals
- Must possess effective interpersonal skills with good written, verbal communication, and organizational skills
- A good team player
- Fluent verbal and written communication in English
- Experience working with rodents, rabbits, pigs and/ or aquatics species is preferred, especially in large animal (pig, rabbits) procedures/ anaesthesia/ surgeries
- Experience working in the animal care and use program in research/ teaching/ training is preferred
- AALAS Certification (e.g. ALAT, LAT, LATG) is an asset
- Ability and experience to train is an asset
- Certificate/ qualification in surgery (e.g. SRA, SRT or SRS certification) is a plus
- Ideally candidate should have basic knowledge and be proficient in the use of computer software application such as Microsoft Word, Excel and various database system.
- Able to lift up to 15kg
- Holder of Class 3 driving license is beneficial
