Job Description

A tower crane operator is responsible for

safely controlling cranes to lift, move, and position construction materials, working at high elevations

. Key duties include conducting pre-operational inspections, interpreting load charts, communicating with ground crews via radio/signals, and adhering to strict safety protocols.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operational Control: Safely operate tower cranes (e.g., luffing jib or hammerhead) to move, lift, and place materials.
  • Safety Inspections: Perform daily pre-and post-operational checks on cables, mechanics, and brakes to ensure the crane is in safe working order.
  • Lift Planning & Capacity: Calculate load weights and compare them with crane capacity to prevent overloading.
  • Communication: Coordinate closely with riggers and signal persons, following hand or radio signals.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations (WSH, OSHA), including monitoring weather conditions like high winds and securing the crane at the end of the shift.
  • Maintenance: Carry out routine maintenance, cleaning, and reporting of any mechanical defects or safety hazards.
  • Situational Awareness: Work at heights while maintaining high concentration to avoid hazards to nearby workers or structures.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Relevant, valid license/certification for operating tower cranes.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
  • Strong understanding of load charts and safety regulations.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and at significant heights.
