Position Summary
The individual is responsible for identifying, supporting, and monitoring students with special educational and learning needs across the school. The role involves providing targeted interventions, counselling support, behavioural and learning strategies, and collaborating closely with teachers, parents, and external professionals to ensure inclusive and effective learning experiences for all students. The individual plays a key role in promoting student well-being, academic access, emotional development, and successful integration within the school environment.
Position Requirements
Educational Qualification
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Special Education, Psychology, Counselling, Inclusive Education, Child Development, or a related field.
Certification
Relevant certification or professional qualification in Special Educational Needs (SEN), Learning Support, Counselling, Inclusive Education, or Child Psychology from a recognized institution.
Experience
Minimum 3-7 years of experience working with students with diverse learning needs in a school setting.
Experience supporting students across different learning profiles including ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, Global Developmental Delay, Anxiety, Behavioural Needs, and other learning differences.
Experience in international school settings and exposure to Cambridge/IB/CBSE curricula will be an advantage.
Knowledge & Skills
Strong understanding of inclusive education practices and intervention strategies.
Ability to interpret psycho-educational assessments, therapist reports, and professional evaluations.
Strong communication and counselling skills when working with students and parents.
Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers and leadership teams.
Understanding of child protection, safeguarding, and duty of care responsibilities.
Core Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the special education needs teacher is to provide appropriate academic, emotional, behavioural, and social support to students with special educational needs and learning differences. The counsellor will work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external specialists to ensure students receive targeted interventions and accommodations that support their growth and development.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Student Support & Intervention
Identify students requiring learning, behavioural, emotional, or developmental support through observations, referrals, assessments, and review meetings.
Provide individualized and small-group intervention support based on students learning profiles and needs.
Develop and implement support strategies, accommodations, and intervention plans for students with SEN requirements.
Monitor student progress and maintain records of interventions, observations, and support provided.
Support students in developing self-regulation, emotional resilience, social skills, executive functioning, and independent learning skills.
Provide counselling and emotional support to students experiencing academic, behavioural, or social-emotional challenges.
Assessment & Professional Report Analysis
Review and interpret psycho-educational reports, therapy assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and recommendations from external professionals.
Translate professional recommendations into practical classroom accommodations and support strategies.
Guide teachers in implementing individualized learning support strategies within the classroom.
Assist in identifying students who may require further professional assessment or intervention.
Parent Support & Collaboration
Conduct regular meetings with parents to discuss student progress, concerns, and intervention strategies.
Provide guidance and counselling support to parents based on the child's learning profile, behavioural needs, and developmental spectrum.
Recommend suitable strategies and home support plans to strengthen continuity between school and home.
Work collaboratively with external therapists, psychologists, counsellors, and support agencies where required.
Teacher Collaboration & Inclusion
Work closely with teachers to ensure inclusive classroom practices and differentiation strategies are effectively implemented.
Support teachers in understanding student profiles and learning needs.
Conduct workshops or awareness sessions for staff on SEN-related strategies and inclusive practices.
Assist teachers in behaviour management planning and classroom support approaches.
Well-being & Safeguarding
Promote student well-being and inclusion across the school environment.
Ensure confidentiality and sensitivity while handling student information and reports.
Recognize and respond appropriately to safeguarding and child protection concerns in line with school policy.
Maintain accurate and confidential documentation related to SEN support and interventions.
Child Protection Responsibilities
Ensure the emotional and physical safety of students under care.
Maintain awareness of safeguarding and child protection protocols.
Promptly report concerns related to student safety, welfare, or well-being to the appropriate authorities within the school.
Maintain confidentiality while acting in the best interests of the child at all times.
