Job Description
Title: Tax Manager
Location: Kuala Lumpur
Experience: 8–10 years
Scope: Direct and indirect tax in Malaysia, with potential to expand to a regional Asia remit
Role type: Individual contributor
Reports to: Head of Tax
Role overview
We're hiring a Tax Manager with 8–10 years experience to lead both direct and indirect tax for a conglomerate building new data centres in Malaysia. The role is based in Kuala Lumpur.
Key responsibilities
You'll run tax end to end: keep compliance clean, and turn tax into practical advice the business can act on.
Direct tax
- Own corporate income tax compliance: Form C filings, CP204 estimates and revisions, and tax computations
- Manage withholding tax, capital allowances, incentives and reinvestment allowances
- Oversee transfer pricing documentation and related-party transactions
- Review deferred tax and tax provisions for monthly, quarterly and year-end reporting
Indirect tax
- Manage Sales Tax and Service Tax (SST) registration, returns and reconciliations
- Assess the SST impact of new products, contracts and changes in scope or rates
- Keep e-invoicing (MyInvois) processes compliant and working with Finance and IT
- Handle customs duties and import/export tax matters where relevant
Advisory and problem-solving
- Advise on the tax impact of new deals, restructurings, contracts and business initiatives
- Spot tax risks and savings opportunities, and drive them to a decision
- Track legislative changes and explain what they mean for the business in plain terms
Audits and stakeholders
- Lead tax audits and investigations with LHDN (IRB) and RMCD (Customs)
- Manage external tax advisers and auditors
- Work with Finance, Legal, Procurement and business teams as the go-to tax partner
- Improve tax processes, controls and systems
Who we're looking for
Technical depth matters, but attitude decides who thrives here.
- High energy: you move quickly and stay sharp in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
- Hungry for variety: you don't settle for the day-to-day; you look for what's next and take it on
- A problem-solver: you enjoy untangling complex issues and land on practical, defensible answers
- Independent: you own your work, make sound calls without close supervision, and know when to escalate
- Willing to learn: you stay curious, pick up new areas fast, and keep up as tax rules change
Qualifications and experience
The ideal candidate trained in a Big 4 firm and has since applied that rigour in a commercial, in-house role.
Must have
- Big 4 tax experience (minimum 2 years in direct and/or indirect tax), plus commercial or in-house experience
- Candidates coming straight from the Big 4 must show hands-on experience: preparing computations, returns and filings themselves, not only reviewing others work
- 8–10 years of tax experience covering both direct and indirect tax
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Law or a related field
- Strong working knowledge of the Income Tax Act 1967, Sales Tax Act 2018 and Service Tax Act 2018
- Hands-on experience handling LHDN and RMCD audits or queries
- Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to explain tax positions clearly to management, the business and the authorities
Nice to have
- Professional qualification such as ACCA, CTIM, MIA, MICPA or CA (a plus, not required)
- Transfer pricing experience
- Exposure to e-invoicing (MyInvois) implementation
- Experience with regional (Asia) or cross-border tax matters
- Tax technology or ERP experience (e.g. SAP, Oracle)
