We run an internal government application serving the whole of government. Beyond maintaining core systems, we actively partner with agencies to design and implement product-centric solutions that address real operational needs. Increasingly, our work leverages AI across the stack from intelligent automation and data-driven insights to generative interfaces and decision-support systems.
Our teams work in a cloud-native, AWS-based environment, building with Python, Node.js, and Go, and delivering modern frontend applications with frameworks like Vue.js. We move fast, stay agile, and adapt to ever-changing requirements and scope.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Software Engineer Intern (Generalist) to join our dynamic team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the development and maintenance of backend and frontend systems under the guidance of senior engineers
- Contribute to building services using Python, Node.js, or Go, learning best practices in software development
- Assist in developing user-facing features with modern frontend frameworks (e.g. Vue.js, React, or similar)
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, engineers, and partner agencies to understand requirements and contribute to solutions
- Gain hands-on experience with AWS services and cloud-native infrastructure
- Participate in debugging, testing, and optimising applications and workflows
- Learn and apply code quality standards, testing practices, and operational excellence principles
- Explore and experiment with AI tools and LLM-based solutions to enhance development productivity
Requirements
Required Skills & Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field
- Solid foundation in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, JavaScript, Java, C++, or Go)
- Experience building projects through coursework, personal projects, hackathons, or previous internships
- Basic understanding of web development concepts (frontend and backend)
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g. Git)
- Interest in cloud technologies and willingness to learn AWS services
- Curiosity about system design, scalability, and security concepts
- Comfortable learning across the stack - frontend, backend, and infrastructure
- Experience using AI tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) for coding assistance is a plus
- Ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced, agile environment with evolving requirements
- Strong communication skills and collaborative mindset
- Self-motivated with a genuine passion for software engineering and problem-solving
