Position Overview

To develop, enhance, integrate and maintain web-based applications that support our business operations and digital initiatives.

The role requires strong hands-on development skills, particularly in PHP and MySQL, together with the ability to work with modern development tools, APIs, cloud/server environments and AI-assisted coding tools. The successful candidate should be comfortable taking ownership of applications from requirements gathering and development through testing, deployment, maintenance and user support.

AI-Assisted Development Skills

Comfortable using AI coding assistants and Large Language Model (LLM) tools as part of the software development workflow.

Able to write effective prompts and provide appropriate technical context to AI tools for coding, debugging, refactoring, documentation and testing.

Able to critically review AI-generated code rather than relying on generated output without verification.

Understands common risks associated with AI-generated code, including security vulnerabilities, incorrect assumptions, outdated libraries, inefficient implementations and hallucinated APIs or functions.

Able to use AI tools to increase development speed while maintaining code quality, security and maintainability.

Understands the importance of protecting confidential information, credentials, source code and sensitive business or customer data when using external AI tools.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop, test, maintain and enhance web applications using PHP, MySQL ,CodeIgniter and Laravel.
2. Work closely with project managers, business users, designers, vendors and other developers to understand requirements, recommend solutions and define project scope.
3. Translate business requirements into practical, scalable and maintainable technical solutions.
4. Write clean, secure, reusable and efficient code in accordance with development standards and best practices.
5. Use AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or similar tools to improve development efficiency, troubleshoot issues, generate or refactor code, assist with documentation and accelerate testing.
6. Review, validate and understand all AI-generated code before implementation, ensuring that it meets security, performance, maintainability and business requirements.
7. Troubleshoot, debug and optimise existing applications, databases and integrations to improve performance, reliability and user experience.
8. Develop new application features and enhancements based on business requirements and user feedback.
9. Design, develop, consume and troubleshoot REST APIs and integrations with internal systems and third-party platforms.
10. Work with third-party technology partners to review API documentation, troubleshoot integrations and coordinate technical implementation.
11. Perform code reviews and provide constructive feedback to maintain code quality and development standards.
12. Implement appropriate application and data security practices, including input validation, authentication, authorisation, secure API handling and protection of sensitive information.
13. Create and maintain automated and manual tests to improve application reliability and reduce regression issues.
14. Manage source code using Git and follow structured branching, pull request and deployment workflows.
15. Support and improve CI/CD processes to automate application testing, deployment and release management.
16. Assist with server configuration, application deployment, monitoring, optimisation, troubleshooting and maintenance.
17. Monitor production applications and investigate errors, performance issues and system incidents when required.
18. Assist business users with application-related issues and gather feedback to identify opportunities for improvement.
19. Maintain clear technical documentation including application architecture, APIs, database structures, deployment procedures, system configurations and development processes.
20. Evaluate new technologies, frameworks, AI tools and development practices that can improve productivity, security or system performance.
21. Take ownership of assigned projects and applications throughout their development and operational lifecycle.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
2. Proven experience developing web applications using PHP and MySQL.
3. Strong working knowledge of Laravel and/or CodeIgniter.
4. Good understanding of object-oriented programming, MVC architecture and modern web development principles.
5. Experience designing and working with relational databases, including database structure, queries, indexing and performance optimisation.
6. Working knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
7. Experience using Git and collaborative development workflows.
8. Experience developing or integrating REST APIs and web services.
9. Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
10. Able to work independently while collaborating effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
11. Good communication and documentation skills.
12. Detail-oriented with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

Preferred Skills

1. Experience with additional PHP frameworks, JavaScript frameworks or development libraries.
2. Experience with JavaScript frameworks such as React, Vue.js or similar technologies.
3. Experience integrating third-party platforms, payment systems, booking systems, CRM systems or enterprise applications.
4. Experience with RESTful APIs, webhooks, JSON and API authentication methods such as OAuth and API keys.
5. Understanding of database design, query optimisation, indexing and application performance optimisation.
6. Experience with Linux-based web servers and environments such as Apache or Nginx.
7. Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud is an advantage.
8. Familiarity with Docker, containers or modern development environments is an advantage.
9. Experience implementing or maintaining CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment.
10. Familiarity with application monitoring, logging and error-tracking tools.
11. Understanding of web application security principles and secure coding practices.
12. Experience with automated testing, including unit, integration and API testing.
13. Ability to communicate with and interpret API documentation from third-party technology partners based in China, including documentation written in Chinese.
14. Ability to read and communicate technical information in Chinese is an advantage.
