With minimal supervision, the Senior Underwriter independently contributes to the growth and profitability of the Casualty line of business through marketing, underwriting and managing of products and services of complex risks. Risks may require special handling or unusual coverage. Has distinct accountability for business results. Requires extensive level of knowledge of Casualty product lines, exceptional strategic and marketing capabilities as well as technical knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, procedures and techniques. May serve as a product line expert or provide product-line expertise to department. Responsible for budget, marketing, risk assessment, and broker management.
Responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients to facilitate the marketing and sale and training of the Liberty brand and products.
- Review, rate and underwrite target new business and renewal business in line with Liberty's quality selection and adequate pricing guidelines.
- Execute selling and negotiation strategies to ensure profitability and growth of the product line.
- Ensure brokers and clients receive a high level of service that differentiates Liberty from its competitors.
- Communicate with other product line Underwriters in order to leverage cross-selling opportunities and deliver a complete service to the broker and client.
- Ensure premium payments are received and discrepancies investigated in a timely manner by referring to Debtors report from Finance department.
- Manage the portfolio to ensure growth and retention.
- Contribute to an effective team environment by interacting professionally with all team members and providing development, support and assistance as required.
- Take responsibility for mentoring, training and development of other less experienced employees in relevant product line.
- Provide strategic input into product development and marketing plans including market research, competitor analysis, product design and geographic/segment focus.
- Review and negotiate policy terms and conditions, assist with policy wordings and endorsements.
- Participate in the execution of marketing plans.
- Represent Liberty at industry social events, conferences and other relevant market related presentations.
- Compile and present training to brokers and industry stakeholders on relevant topics as required.
- Strengthen the Liberty Brand and own profile within the market development more strategic relationships.
- Work closely with claims department, risk management and all other key internal stakeholders to promote Liberty's integrated business unit approach and ensure seamless delivery of underwriting services.
- Liaise with Business Operations and Compliance regarding streamlining administrative processes and creating efficiencies.
- Coordinate and administer workflow via Processing Services Team (PST).
- Manage and maintain the Online Quotation System and Certificate Issuance System.
- Articulate Liberty's value proposition and test rating elasticity during the underwriting process.
- Provide input into the financial and strategic planning process relative to the product line.
- Act as a referral point to other relevant employees within the department.
- Provide technical training and guidance to underwriters/assistant underwriters & underwriting assistants.
- Demonstrate behavior at all times in line with the Liberty core values.
- Update and maintain various logs and prepare reports as required.
- Participate in audits as required.
- Ensure compliance with all legal, statutory and corporate affairs requirements on a timely basis.
- Take responsibility and showing initiative in the development of your technical and soft skills.
- Continue to seek improvement of the product and self by the continuous improvement of practices and processes.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by your manager or other appropriate officer.
Experience & Skills:
- Significant relevant experience in the General (non-Life) Insurance industry.
- Significant relevant experience in an aligned role with a broker or insurance company.
- Excellent working knowledge of PC based systems and applications such as Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database systems for managing contacts, schedules and calendars is required.
- Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline would be desirable.
