ABOUT THE JOB
We are looking for a Senior Software Developer (COBOL / Java) to support a system modernization initiative, contributing to the
migration of legacy
COBOL applications toward a Java-based architecture. The role combines hands-on
Java development with legacy COBOL analysis, technical solution design, testing, and migration delivery to ensure business logic continuity throughout the transition.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in client workshops to capture requirements, understand existing COBOL system behavior, and translate them into target technical solutions.
- Prepare Product Design Documents and Technical Specifications for Java development, system integration, migration work packages, and change requests.
- Support Business Analysts with technical analysis, solution proposals, impact assessments, and development estimations.
- Analyze and reverse-engineer legacy COBOL applications and business logic to support migration toward the target Java architecture.
- Design and develop medium-to-complex Java applications using Java EE / Spring technologies.
- Perform impact analysis, technical estimation, and risk assessment for functional stories, migration activities, and change requests.
- Support migration risk assessment and mitigation, including data integrity, parallel runs, system compatibility, and cutover.
- Perform Unit, Integration, and System Testing, including validation of Java applications against existing COBOL system behavior.
- Provide technical guidance to offshore and distributed development teams.
- Support clients during UAT, including technical enquiries, batch job execution in simulation environments, and issue resolution.
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Project Leads, Business Analysts, developers, testers, and production support teams throughout project delivery.
- Maintain technical and domain-level artifacts in line with established project methodology.
About You
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience, with strong knowledge of Java EE and/or Spring.
- Experience working with COBOL applications, including the ability to read, understand, or analyze existing COBOL code and business logic.
- Strong experience designing, developing, and maintaining medium-to-complex applications.
- Experience translating business requirements and legacy system logic into technical specifications and target solution designs.
- Experience performing impact analysis, development estimation, and technical risk assessment.
- Experience with Unit, Integration, and System Testing.
- Comfortable working directly with clients and supporting UAT and technical issue resolution.
- Experience providing technical guidance to offshore or distributed development teams.
- Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder-management skills.
Nice to Have
- Experience in COBOL-to-Java, mainframe-to-Java, or other legacy modernization and migration projects.
- Hands-on COBOL development experience within mainframe or core banking environments.
- Experience with batch processing, overnight batch jobs, and target batch architecture.
- Experience within core banking, securities, or financial services environments.
- Business/domain knowledge of securities operations, including pre-trade and post-trade processes or broader capital markets.
- Experience working across legacy and modern technology environments involving multiple systems and cross-functional delivery teams.
