Job Summary

Group Risk is part of the second line of defence at Schroders and therefore works closely with the other second line functions, most notably Compliance, Legal, Finance and Human Resources and the 3rd line of defence, being Group Internal Audit.

The purpose of Group risk is to identify risks and provide independent oversight and challenge to the 1st line of defence and ensure the group's risk profile is properly understood and operating in line with risk appetite.

The APAC Operational Risk team is responsible for ensuring that the risk management process is effectively implemented by supporting the business to interpret and adopt it. The team provides an independent oversight and challenge to the business in the management of their risks and supports them in completing their own risk assessments and for identifying, managing and mitigating risks.

This role is an integral role within the APAC Operational Risk team and will be responsible for operational risk management oversight of certain locations and functions within APAC, reporting to Head of Enterprise Risk and Compliance, Asia Pacific.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversight of the operational risk framework and ensuring adherence of the components within by the 1st line of defence (including providing advice in carrying out the tasks and maintenance of required information in Archer) such as:
  • RCAs
  • Operational Risk Events
  • Issues and Actions
  • Analysing material sources of operational risk across the region, providing forward looking operational risk expertise to business and senior management.
  • Establish relationships with business area heads to keep informed of changes and business developments.
  • Involvement in key projects and initiatives to oversee the risk identification, assessment and mitigation plans by the 1st line of defence and ensure appropriate operational risk assessments are performed as necessary.
  • Involvement in the New Product and New Client risk assessment process, review and challenge the assessment results and mitigation proposed/undertaken where appropriate.
  • Represent Risk in attending various Local and Regional Committee meetings and project steering committee/working groups
  • Work with the Group Risk team to ensure key policies and frameworks are adhered to in the region.
  • Escalate material issues rapidly to the Head of Enterprise Risk and Compliance, Asia Pacific.
  • Other ad-hoc activities e.g., carry out risk based deep dive reviews based on requests from senior management

Essential Skills

  • More than 12 years of experience within the Financial Services industry with at least 8 years spent either within 1st line risk or operational risk management. Knowledge of the Asset Management industry preferable
  • Thorough knowledge of the operational risk management framework
  • An ability to engage effectively with a range of different individuals across the organization
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Innate ability to synthesize information and to understand what the key issues are and the appropriate actions required to address these
  • Possess a change mindset with an ability to constantly challenge status quo
  • Initiated and proactive
  • Managerial experience will be an added advantage
  • Ability to think strategically and handle time pressure
  • Graduate level education in an appropriate discipline
  • Prior business management experience preferable
