Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior / Lead HVDC Engineer to lead the engineering, design, technical assurance, and delivery of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems for major offshore energy and power transmission projects.

The role will support the full project lifecycle, from concept development and feasibility studies through FEED, detailed design, procurement, testing, commissioning, and project handover. Acting as the primary technical authority for HVDC systems, you will work closely with clients, OEMs, transmission operators, certification bodies, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure successful project delivery.

Typical systems include offshore converter platforms, offshore substations, 66kV AC collection systems, HVAC transformation and compensation systems, converter transformers, MMC converter technology, and ±320kV to ±525kV HVDC export systems, together with associated protection, control, auxiliary, and LV electrical systems.

Key Responsibilities

HVDC System Design & Engineering

  • Develop and review HVDC system architectures, design philosophies, and technical requirements.
  • Define technical requirements for HVDC converter stations, offshore converter platforms, and associated AC and DC systems.
  • Review electrical studies, design calculations, and engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with project, client, and industry requirements.
  • Support development of system operating philosophies, functional descriptions, and design basis documents.

Power System Studies & Grid Integration

  • Review and assess power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, harmonic, dynamic stability, EMT, insulation coordination, and reactive power analyses.
  • Evaluate system performance under normal, contingency, and fault conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with grid codes, transmission operator requirements, and system performance obligations.

Converter Technology & Equipment Integration

  • Provide technical oversight of VSC HVDC and MMC technologies.
  • Review designs for converter transformers, reactors, valve systems, HVDC switchgear, cooling systems, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Support successful integration of OEM equipment with electrical, control, and protection systems.

Control, Protection & Compliance

  • Review HVDC control and protection philosophies.
  • Support verification of fault ride-through, voltage control, frequency response, reactive power control, black-start, and restoration capabilities.
  • Participate in protection coordination and system interoperability reviews.

Technical Leadership & Project Delivery

  • Lead technical reviews, design assurance activities, and engineering governance processes.
  • Review supplier and contractor deliverables, technical deviations, and change requests.
