We are looking for a talent who is suitable for the position of Senior Dry Bulk Trader (Iron Ore, Coal, Bauxite & Bulk Commodities) to join Stavian to #GOGLOBAL with the following criteria & work:
Role Overview
We are seeking a commercially driven Senior Dry Bulk Trader with 8–12 years of experience across iron ore, coal, bauxite, and related bulk commodities. The candidate will bring a transportable, revenue-generating book of business, supported by deep relationships across producers, end-users, and intermediaries.
The role requires ownership of end-to-end physical trading, integrating market insight, logistics execution, and risk management, with a strong emphasis on P&L delivery, optionality extraction, and strategic portfolio development.
Key Responsibilities
1. P&L Ownership & Trade Execution
- Originate, structure, and execute physical trading transactions across dry bulk commodities.
- Manage full trade lifecycle: origination → negotiation → execution → logistics → settlement.
- Deliver consistent risk-adjusted profitability through directional and arbitrage strategies.
- Optimise margins via blending, timing, quality arbitrage, and freight positioning.
2. Origination & Network Leverage
- Deploy an established buy-side and sell-side network across:
+ Mining companies (majors and mid-tier producers)
+ Steel mills, utilities, and industrial consumers
- Regional traders and intermediaries
- Leverage existing relationships to generate immediate deal flow and revenue.
- Expand network into new geographies and counterparties (e.g., China, India, SE Asia, EMEA)
3. Portfolio & Market Strategy
- Build and manage a diversified commodity portfolio (iron ore, coal, bauxite, soft bulk where relevant).
- Identify and execute cross-commodity and geographic arbitrage opportunities.
- Integrate freight (Capesize/Panamax/Supramax), storage, and optionality into trading strategies.
- Develop market views using:
+ Supply-demand fundamentals
+ Macro indicators (steel demand, power generation, infrastructure cycles)
+ Pricing benchmarks (SGX, DCE, index-linked markets)
4. Risk Management & Hedging
- Manage exposure across price, freight, credit, and operational risks.
- Utilise derivatives (e.g., FFAs, swaps, futures) to hedge physical positions.
- Ensure adherence to risk limits, VaR frameworks, and compliance protocols.
- Actively manage counterparty credit risk in coordination with risk and finance teams.
5. Logistics & Execution Excellence
- Coordinate chartering, shipping, and port logistics:
+ Vessel nomination and freight optimisation
+ Laytime, demurrage, and discharge management
- Ensure seamless coordination across operations, finance, and legal functions.
- Drive operational efficiency to minimise cost leakage and execution risk.
6. Strategic Contribution
- Contribute to the firm's trading strategy, market positioning, and expansion plans.
- Mentor junior traders and support team capability development.
- Identify structural opportunities (e.g., direct-to-mill models, digital platforms, supply chain integration).
Requirements:
Experience
- 8–12 years in physical trading of dry bulk commodities.
- Demonstrated track record of independently generating P&L.
- Proven ability to transfer and monetise an existing book of business.
- Strong exposure to iron ore and/or coal markets (mandatory), with additional exposure to bauxite, alumina, or soft bulk preferred.
