The Senior Design Manager is a key member of the Global Infrastructure Development team and a significant contributor to the Design/Build/Operate effort. This person works closely with the Senior Director of Design Management APAC to manage one or more data center design projects in collaboration with internal discipline leaders and cross-functional teams.
The Senior Design Manager is responsible for overseeing design development as well as the production of construction documents and specifications. This effort involves coordination between NTT GDC global experts and outside consultants including structural, mechanical, electrical, and Civil Engineers and Landscape Architects.
The Senior Design Manager is also responsible for managing consultant contracts. Their duties will extend to non-technical, or accounting tasks related to the delivery of the work.
The Senior Design Manager requires a creative, detail-oriented problem solver with excellent communication skills that can achieve high quality standards while carefully considering cost and feasibility factors. This position requires good judgment to meet project objectives, with the ability to collaborate and manage the accountabilities of a diverse interdisciplinary team focused on creating and maintaining the best Data Center environments in our industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and manage consultant agreements, scopes of work, and fees.
- Develop and evaluate RFPs/RFQs; justify consultant selection.
- Ensure design documents align with owner requirements and construction needs.
- Review and approve consultant invoices.
- Coordinate with authorities for approvals and compliance.
- Manage project design schedules, budgets, and work plans.
- Lead and oversee internal/external design teams and equipment suppliers.
- Monitor consultant workload and quality.
- Document and price projects per customer/lease requirements.
- Represent the owner in design meetings; communicate changes to stakeholders.
- Contribute to design standards and cost-efficient solutions.
- Support pricing efforts with design and equipment guidelines.
- Assist with capital and tenant improvement projects.
- Develop design concepts and review for local compliance and standards.
- Ensure adherence to design standards; document deviations.
- Prepare cost impact reports and present solutions.
- Conduct QA/QC reviews of design documentation.
- Control design-related expenditures and manage value engineering.
- Collaborate with product, sales, and operations teams to meet project goals.
- Interpret and implement customer-specific design requirements.
- Participate in global standardization initiatives as needed.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of contracts, building codes, and regulations.
- Ability to interpret design drawings, budgets, and schedules.
- Expertise in data center or critical facility design (MEP, CSA systems).
- Excellent project management and communication skills.
- Familiarity with BIM, CAD tools (Revit/AutoCAD), and MS Office.
- Creative problem-solving for cost and design optimization.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 8 years in data center or critical facility projects.
- Experience in new construction, tenant improvements, and capital projects.
- PMP or similar certification is a plus.
- Proficiency in consultant management and stakeholder coordination.
