Overview:
Our client is an early-stage brokerage startup building their own proprietary trading platform. Having validated initial product direction, they are now looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join their founding team and take ownership of the backend systems powering the platform.
This is a zero-to-one role suited for someone who is hands-on, proactive, and excited to build and scale systems from the ground up. The right candidate will work closely with founders and stakeholders, shape technical decisions, and play a key role in building the company's technical foundation, with the potential to grow into a CTO role over time.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and own scalable backend services and APIs using Node.js and PostgreSQL
- Architect and maintain reliable, secure, and high-performance backend systems
- Take ownership of database design, schema optimization, and system performance
- Work closely with founders, product, and frontend teams to translate product requirements into technical solutions
- Contribute to technical decision-making, system architecture, and engineering best practices
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across the platform and continuously improve system stability
- Operate with a high degree of ownership in a fast-moving startup environment
Job Requirements:
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience
- Strong experience with Node.js
- Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including schema design and performance optimization
- Strong fundamentals in backend architecture, system design, and API development
- Experience building and maintaining production systems
- Proactive, self-driven, and comfortable operating in startup environments
- Strong ownership mindset and willingness to be hands-on
Nice to Have
- Ability to think from a product perspective, balancing technical decisions with user and business impact
- Experience working closely with cross-functional stakeholders (founders, product, frontend, etc.)
- Experience with React
- Experience in FinTech, brokerage, trading, or financial platforms
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Experience in early-stage or startup environments
