They often perform the following duties:
- Greeting customers when they enter the store or department and offering assistance
- Determining customer needs and recommending products to fit them
- Answering questions about products and services
- Informing customers about sales, promotions and policies
- Demonstrating how products work to encourage sales
- Processing payments using a POS system and packaging purchases
- Stocking merchandise and creating displays to maintain the appearance of the sales floor
- Taking inventory on a periodic basis
