Safety Coordinator - Job Description & Requirements:
1. Safety Planning & Technical Compliance
Implement the Project HSE Plan for specialized tunnelling works.
Ensure strict compliance with local safety laws, OSHA/ISO standards, and client requirements.
Review and approve method statements, risk assessments, and permits to work.
Coordinate safety requirements for blasting, excavation, and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations.
2. Underground Site Monitoring & Inspections
Conduct daily underground safety inspections to monitor critical hazards, including ground instability, rock falls, water ingress, and flooding.
Monitor ventilation and air quality (gas, dust, oxygen levels).
Oversee explosives handling (if applicable) and electrical/heavy machinery risks.
Exercise authority to stop unsafe work and report violations immediately.
3. Safety Leadership, Training & Awareness
Demonstrate active safety leadership by delivering daily toolbox talks and safety briefings.
Conduct comprehensive safety inductions for new workers and visitors.
Train workers on critical life-saving protocols: confined space entry, emergency evacuation, PPE usage, and working safely near TBM/blasting zones.
4. Incident Management
Investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions underground.
Prepare detailed incident reports and implement corrective action plans.
Coordinate with site management to prevent recurrence.
5. Emergency Readiness & Preparedness
Ensure total site readiness for fire, gas leaks, collapse, flooding, and medical emergencies within the tunnel.
Monitor and maintain critical emergency equipment, including chambers, gas detectors, firefighting systems, and emergency lighting/communication systems.
Lead and participate in mock drills and emergency response exercises.
6. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate HSE records, including inspection reports, training logs, permit-to-work systems, and incident statistics.
Prepare daily/weekly safety reports for management and clients.
Requirements & Selection Criteria:
Mandatory Certification & Technical Compliance
Valid Safety certification recognized by local authorities.
BCSS Tunnelling and Confined Space Rescue Certification
Specialized Tunnelling & Underground Experience
Minimum of 5 years of proven experience specifically in tunnelling projects.
Strong technical knowledge of TBM, NATM, and drill & blast methods.
Able to work in a demanding site environment, including 6 days per week with Saturday and Sunday shift work.
Safety Leadership & Emergency Readiness for Tunnelling
Proven capability to lead workforce safety training and manage high-stakes emergency response protocols in an underground setting.
