Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research fellow for Fighting the next emerging virus outbreak: from early warning to medical countermeasures in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a leading centre for education and research in microbiology, infectious diseases, and immunology, with a strong emphasis on translational outcomes (https://medicine.nus.edu.sg/mbio/). Appointments will initially be offered on a yearly contract basis, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project outcomes.

Purpose of the post

The research fellow will report to and work closely with the Principal Investigator and other team members to ensure the timely and successful completion of the project. The RF will primarily be leading independent research through conducting in vitro and in vivo experiments, performing flow cytometry, handling live viruses, and carrying out neutralisation assays.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Research fellow will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and will be expected to:

  • Oversee and coordinate assigned research projects, ensuring timely progress and achievement of key milestones
  • Drive independent research initiatives aligned with project objectives and overall research goals
  • Design and execute experiments involving cell culture, flow cytometry, protein expression, and protein purification
  • Conduct structural studies, including cryo-EM sample preparation and structure determination
  • Perform data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation using appropriate computational and statistical tools
  • Prepare, write, and revise scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Maintain accurate and detailed experimental records and documentation
  • Collaborate with team members and contribute to a productive and innovative research environment

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Hold a PhD degree in life sciences, biomedical sciences, biochemistry or related discipline, at least 1 year of relevant experience
  2. be able to work independently and in a team, have an investigative nature, attention to detail
  3. have experience in performing animal experiment, cryo-EM, and flow-cytometry
  4. have experiences in the infectious disease areas of research, especially on coronaviruses and henipaviruses
