About the opportunity
Our client is an established international commodities platform with a growing footprint in the region. They are looking to hire a commercially minded and entrepreneurial professional to lead their presence in Malaysia. This is a strategic role with visibility across senior stakeholders, combining business development, external relationship management, and oversight of local operations.
Location
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with regular travel within the country.
The role
This position will serve as the key bridge between headquarters and the Malaysia market. The successful candidate will help shape and execute local growth strategy, identify commercial opportunities, manage important stakeholder relationships, and support the business in navigating the local operating environment.
Key responsibilities
Drive business development and execute growth plans in Malaysia
Identify and assess new trading and investment opportunities
Lead and support negotiations for key commercial arrangements and partnerships
Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators, industry stakeholders, business partners, and relevant external parties
Oversee matters relating to licences, approvals, compliance, and local business operations
Monitor market developments, policy changes, and commercial risks relevant to the business
Represent the organisation in external meetings and industry engagements
Support the building and development of a strong in-country team
Requirements
Degree in Business, Law, Finance, Engineering, Languages, or a related discipline
At least 5 years of experience in commodity trading or a closely related commercial role
Exposure to metals, mining, agricultural commodities, or adjacent trading environments would be useful
Strong understanding of the Malaysia market and broader Southeast Asia business landscape
Proven commercial judgment and negotiation skills
Ability to manage a broad mix of strategic, operational, and stakeholder-facing responsibilities
Strong communication skills and confidence working across different cultures and seniority levels
Fluency in English is essential, Malay would be an advantage, and Mandarin would be helpful
