Job Summary
As QA/QC Manager, you will be the guardian of quality in the design and construction of high-speed aluminum commercial vessels.
Reporting to Penguin's Deputy General Manager (Group Shipbuilding & Repair), you will lead quality assurance and control activities across our Singapore headquarters and our primary shipbuilding yard, PT Kim Seah Shipyard in Batam.
You will be responsible for implementing ISO-compliant systems, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring all projects meet stringent classification society rules and customer expectations.
This role requires a hands-on leader who can bridge the gap between technical compliance and operational excellence in the world's most prolific builder of aluminium commercial ships.
Key Responsibilities
1. Quality Management & Compliance
- Maintain and evolve the Group's Quality Management System (QMS) in compliance with ISO 9001 and classification society rules (eg, Bureau Veritas).
- Lead internal and external audits, ensuring timely closure of findings and robust documentation control.
- Develop and track Quality KPIs, providing periodic performance reports and risk assessments to Senior Management.
2. Operational Oversight (Singapore & Batam)
- Manage QA/QC activities across both locations, coordinating resources for inspections, NDT, welding and coating.
- Ensure strict implementation of Project Quality Plans (PQP) and Inspection Test Plans (ITP) throughout the shipbuilding lifecycle.
- Travel to PT Kim Seah Shipyard (Batam) and other overseas locations for Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and sea trials.
3. Continuous Improvement & Resolution
- Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for major quality issues and spearhead CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions).
- Oversee the resolution of customer complaints and non-conformities, ensuring effective long-term solutions.
- Foster a Quality First culture through training and mentorship of production staff and inspectors.
4. Stakeholder & Supply Chain Management
- Act as the primary technical liaison for customers, owner representatives and class surveyors.
- Monitor subcontractor and supplier performance through regular evaluations and quality audits.
Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 5 years in a QA/QC leadership role within the marine, shipbuilding or offshore sectors.
- Education: Degree or Diploma in Marine, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of classification society rules and shipyard processes (Hull, Mechanical, Piping, Electrical, HVAC).
- Experience in commissioning is a significant plus point.
- Standards: Strong proficiency in ISO 9001 and familiarity with NDT, welding, and coating inspection standards.
- Soft Skills: Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to communicate effectively in English (written and spoken).
- Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia/Melayu would be an advantage to manage the quality assurance and control activities at our primary shipbuilding yard, PT Kim Seah Shipyard in Batam.
- Mobility: Must be willing and able to travel frequently between Singapore and Batam, as well as internationally for FATs.
- Attribute: Meticulous, analytical and capable of working independently in a fast-paced production environment.
