The Opportunity
The Risk Platform team is the defensive shield for every product at Airwallex. We manage risk across Global Treasury, Card Issuing, Payment Acceptance, and Onboarding. In a world where financial crime is evolving at light speed, we remain at the cutting edge-using Machine Learning (ML), and Large Language Models (LLM) to stop threats in their tracks.
As a Principal Engineer, you will be the primary architect for our real-time detection systems and a champion for our AI initiatives. This is a high-impact role for a technical leader who can bridge the gap between traditional risk modeling and next-generation Agentic AI. You will solve hard problems to ensure a holistic approach for risk management.
What You'll Do:
- Lead the strategy for our mission-critical Risk and Fraud platform, with a focus on leveraging AI to enhance transaction security.
- Design the infrastructure for specialized domain agents and deep research tools that automate complex analysis and risk tracking.
- Define patterns for high availability and resiliency, ensuring our risk product becomes increasingly intelligent through automated model training.
- Remain hands-on where it matters most-drafting Design Docs, reviewing critical system code/APIs, and prototyping complex components like feature stores or real-time stream processors.
- Mentor senior engineers and lead through technical influence, fostering a culture of innovation across algorithm and engineering disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 10+ years of total software engineering experience, with at least 8+ years focused on back-end development for large-scale distributed systems.
- Expertise in Java & Spring Boot or Python, including deep knowledge of multi-threading, high-concurrency patterns.
- Proven experience building AI-driven risk control systems serving hundreds of millions of users, preferably within a major fintech or payment platform.
- Proven track record in Risk or Fintech, specifically building systems where data integrity and security are non-negotiable.
- Deep expertise in Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), NLP, and Large Language Models, including practical experience with fine-tuning and building autonomous agent frameworks.
- Experienced in mentoring senior engineers and driving technical decisions through influence rather than management.
Good to Have:
- Experience in Quantitative Modeling and applying AI within a fintech or payment platform.
