Job Description

About Kimbal

Kimbal Technologies is a fast-emerging Indian startup building breakthrough technologies for utilities. Today it functions as a trusted technology partner to the largest DISCOMS of India with 100% Made in India end-to-end solutions for their AMI Projects. The company's AI-enabled meter reading application - Samaksha, workforce management application - Yukti, and Harmonics analyzer - Tarang, are rising as groundbreaking technologies for utilities worldwide.

At the core, Kimbal Technologies is essentially an innovation lab championed by driven technocrats, with raw entrepreneurship as our central pillar. The company leverages emerging technologies, data, and exhaustive research to design proven engineering solutions to empower utilities to distribute reliable, secure, and sustainable energy to their end customers with more confidence and control.

Role

Kimbal is recruiting a Principal Engineer / Architect BMS (Battery Management System) Engineering to take end-to-end technical ownership of battery management systems in a new utility-scale BESS product offering.

This person will define the BMS requirements, establishing a high standard of quality and performance for a system that sits at the heart of the product. They will manage a contracted development partner through each phase of design, driving key technical decisions and ensuring the delivered product cleanly meets specifications. They will develop the battery management algorithms central to a unique and differentiated BESS product offering.

This is a founding role within a new division that operates with the autonomy and pace of a startup, backed by the resources of an established company with deep utility relationships across India. It is an opportunity to work within a small team of world-class domain experts, build a product from the ground-up, and experience the satisfaction of seeing your work come to life in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Own all BMS technical requirements for Kimbal's BESS product, spanning module-level, rack-level, and system-level battery management.
  • Serve as Kimbal's primary technical owner and day-to-day manager for the contracted BMS development partner: define requirements, review designs, evaluate phase-gate deliverables, and drive technical decisions.
  • Develop battery management algorithms, including:
  • State of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) estimation
  • Available power and energy computation
  • Cell, module, and rack-level balancing
  • Thermal management and over-temperature response
  • Fault detection and response
  • Define hardware and firmware requirements for the BMS, including key components, protection mechanisms, balancing architecture, analog sensing front-end, and communication interfaces.
  • Specify BMS interfaces with upstream control systems (PCS, plant controller, and EMS); define requirements for data logging, diagnostics, and remote monitoring.
  • Own BMS acceptance testing, including hardware verification, firmware validation, and system-level integration testing.
  • Lead BMS-relevant components of regulatory certification such as IEC 62619, UN 38.3, BIS.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of global BESS technology and industry trends.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or equivalent proficiency.
  • Meaningful design experience with battery management systems for large-scale stationary energy storage systems.
  • Deep understanding of lithium-ion battery fundamentals, particularly LFP cell electrochemistry, degradation mechanisms, and failure modes.
  • Hands-on experience developing SoC/SoH estimation algorithms.
  • Experience managing or closely coordinating with external development partners.
  • Familiarity with battery safety standards and the regulatory certification process.
  • Strong emotional intelligence that enables tight collaboration within a high-performance team.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication.
  • High standards for quality and attention to detail in work output.

Preferred

  • Experience with BMS certification processes: IEC 62619, UN 38.3, UL 9540A, or BIS.
  • Experience with LFP cell qualification and characterization.
  • Practical design experience with industry best-practice state estimation approaches.
  • Experience designing or specifying hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test systems for BMS.
  • Experience in an early-stage product environment.
