Job Description

Power Electronics / Electrical Engineer / Research Engineer

Aliena is a leading Singapore-based space-tech company producing Hall thruster satellite engines. In January 2022 Aliena broke the record for the smallest satellite ever to launch with a Hall plasma thruster on board. Since then, the company closed several national and international sales and R&D contracts with customers from Europe and Asia. Our engines are mission agnostic, serving all types of missions in any branch of space exploration or space economy, from very low Earth orbits to deep space.

By joining our dynamic and visionary team, you will take part in defining the future of state-of-the-art low power plasma propulsion systems.

Your responsibilities

  • Drive R&D of DC-DC power converters with high voltage outputs to drive Hall Thrusters.
  • Perform the electrical design, simulation and analysis of power electronics circuits and systems to meet technical product requirements. The main focus will be on DC-DC power converters.
  • Conduct the electrical debug, test, characterization, and validation of power electronics designs.
  • Optimise the Power Processing Unit (PPU) design for coupling with Aliena's family of Hall effect thrusters. Understand the interactions between power electronics and plasma devices (internal training provided).
  • Drive the full development lifecycle of the PPU from R&D, to qualification, lifetime validation, and design for manufacturing and production.
  • Keep abreast of small satellite electronics landscape and liaise with vendors to achieve a product compatible with space environments and relying, when possible, on commercial off the shelf components
  • Cooperate with embedded system engineers to improve the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and explore the possibility of an integrated ECU-PPU.
  • Support the design of laboratory experiments to test the PPU performance coupled with different Thruster Units and power rails.
  • Assist in the environmental testing of PPUs and other Aliena systems (might involve travelling abroad).
  • Partner with the operations team in planning for the scaled production stage of the propulsion system.
  • Document and share best-practices with the team and broader space-tech community.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years experience in power electronics or related fields.
  • Experience in DC-DC converter design, schematic layout, PCB design and assembly, including knowledge of eCAD.
  • Experience in modelling, simulating, and testing of power electronics through tools like PSIM, MATLAB, ORCAD/PSPICE, LTspice, etc.
  • Experience in designing and solving technical problems in the area of power and analog circuit design.
  • Experience in working with standard laboratory equipment like oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.
  • Comfortable with soldering and rework of PCBs.

If you are not ticking all of the abovementioned qualifications, don't you worry! We are looking forward to helping you accomplish them together with us!

Ideal profile

  • Motivated self-sufficient individual, aiming to improve themselves with the company
  • Hands-on approach
  • Out-of-the-box problem solver
  • Team player

What we offer

  • Market competitive compensation
  • Personal office computer
  • Dynamic and inclusive work environment
  • Comprehensive health coverage
