The Network Operations Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of the organisation's network infrastructure. This role ensures high availability, optimal performance, and security of LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, and related services through proactive monitoring, incident response, capacity management, and participation in projects and change implementations.
Key responsibilities:
Network monitoring and incident response
- Monitor network health, performance, and availability using NMS, SIEM, and other tools respond to alerts and incidents according to escalation procedures.
- Triage, diagnose, and resolve network incidents perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain incident records, post-incident reports, and lessons-learned documentation.
Operations and maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance tasks: firmware and OS patching, configuration backups, log reviews, and scheduled reboots as required.
- Manage device lifecycle activities including commissioning, decommissioning, and hardware replacements.
- Maintain accurate network documentation: topology diagrams, IP addressing plans, VLAN and routing tables, configuration baselines, and change logs.
Configuration and change management
- Implement network configuration changes and software updates following change management procedures.
- Work with change advisory boards and follow maintenance windows to minimise business impact.
- Validate and test changes in lab/staging environments prior to production deployment when feasible.
Performance, capacity and availability management
- Monitor capacity and performance metrics recommend upgrades or reconfigurations to meet future demand.
- Identify single points of failure and propose redundancy/improvement plans.
- Optimise network performance (QoS, traffic shaping, routing policies) to support critical applications.
Security and compliance
- Ensure network configurations and operations follow security best practices and organisational policies.
- Coordinate with security teams to apply network-based security controls (ACLs, segmentation, firewalls, NAC) and respond to security incidents.
- Support audits and compliance activities by providing required artifacts and evidence
Required qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimally 3+ years of hands-on experience in network operations, network engineering, or a related role.
- Professional certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP, Juniper JNCIA/JNCIS, CompTIA Network+, Fortinet NSE, Palo Alto PCNSE, or equivalent.
