Job Summary
You will lead the Cytology Department to ensure seamless operations by performing cytology tests, supervising staff, and collaborating with consultant pathologists to deliver accurate and timely diagnostic reports. This role requires managing quality control, inventory, and training to uphold high standards and support departmental leadership.
Responsibilities
- Perform cytology tests including pap smears and non-gynecological specimens to deliver accurate and reliable diagnostic results
- Collaborate with consultant pathologists to review quality control results and implement improvements to address deficiencies
- Supervise junior and new staff, providing on-the-job training to ensure competency and adherence to protocols
- Prepare and maintain up-to-date work instruction manuals and ensure staff compliance with procedures
- Manage inventory levels of laboratory supplies using the laboratory computer system and take corrective actions to resolve shortages
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory guidelines and actively participate in hospital quality assurance programs and audits
- Support the Senior Medical Technologist or Section Manager in departmental supervision, problem-solving, budgeting, purchasing, and audit activities
- Act as deputy or in-charge of the Cytology Department during the absence of senior leadership
- Adapt to flexible staffing requirements including shift and call-back duties to maintain continuous department operations
- Independently troubleshoot and resolve operational issues in consultation with superiors
Required competencies and certifications
- Recognized Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology, Science degree, Polytechnic Diploma, or equivalent
- Recognized cytology certification (IAC or equivalent)
Preferred competencies and qualifications
- Four to five years of cytology experience in a medical laboratory, with some years in a senior role preferred
- Proficiency in cytopathology screening and reporting for gynecological and non-gynecological specimens
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and supervisory skills demonstrated through effective team leadership and collaboration
- Competency in using laboratory computer systems for quality control and inventory management
- Ability to conduct on-the-job training and teaching for new staff and trainees
- Effective problem-solving skills to independently identify and resolve departmental challenges
