Operations Manager - Metal Recycling
Director / General Manager
The Manager is fully responsible for the daily operations, profitability, compliance, and workforce discipline of the metal recycling facility. This role requires strong operational control, cost management, safety enforcement, and the ability to handle high-pressure, physically demanding, and time-sensitive environments. Failure to meet operational, safety, or compliance standards will not be acceptable.
1. Operations & Productivity Control
Oversee end-to-end recycling operations, including scrap metal collection, sorting, processing, storage, and dispatch.
Ensure daily production targets are met with minimal downtime and material loss.
Monitor machinery utilization, yard workflow, and manpower deployment to maximize efficiency.
Identify operational bottlenecks and implement immediate corrective actions.
2. Compliance, Safety & Risk Management
Enforce strict workplace safety rules in accordance with MOM / NEA / environmental regulations.
Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
Conduct regular safety briefings, inspections, and incident investigations.
Take disciplinary action against safety violations without compromise.
3. Cost Control & Profitability
Monitor operational costs including fuel, manpower, machine maintenance, and wastage.
Control scrap buying prices, sorting accuracy, and yield recovery to protect profit margins.
Prepare cost analysis and operational reports for management review.
Prevent theft, fraud, material loss, or misuse of company assets.
4. Manpower & Discipline Management
Supervise supervisors, drivers, operators, and general workers.
Ensure attendance, punctuality, productivity, and discipline of all staff.
Handle worker conflicts, misconduct, and underperformance firmly and fairly.
Train workers on correct sorting standards, machine operation, and safety procedures.
5. Equipment & Yard Management
Ensure all machinery (e.g. shear, baler, crane, forklift, excavator) is properly maintained and operated.
Schedule preventive maintenance and coordinate urgent repairs to avoid production delays.
Maintain yard cleanliness, proper stacking, and safe traffic movement.
6. Supplier, Customer & Authority Coordination
Liaise with scrap suppliers, transporters, and buyers to ensure smooth transactions.
Resolve disputes related to weight, grading, delivery, or quality issues.
Coordinate inspections and audits by government authorities when required.
7. Reporting & Accountability
Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports (production, manpower, incidents, costs).
Account for discrepancies in stock, weight, or revenue.
Be fully responsible for site performance and outcomes.
Minimum 5-8 years of experience in metal recycling, construction materials, logistics, or heavy industrial operations.
Proven ability to manage blue-collar workforce under demanding conditions.
Strong knowledge of scrap metal types, grading, weights, and pricing (preferred).
Solid understanding of workplace safety and environmental compliance.
Firm leadership style with the ability to enforce rules and standards.
Willing to work long hours, outdoors, and handle urgent operational issues.
Basic computer skills for reporting and record-keeping.
Poor performers, safety-lenient managers, or hands-off supervisors will not be suitable.
