Purpose & Scope
Reporting to the Department Head, Asset Performance Solar & BESS, this role is accountable for driving the operational excellence, reliability, and performance optimization of Sembcorp's global Energy Storage System (ESS) portfolio. This role oversees key aspects such as battery health monitoring, system efficiency, chargedischarge cycle management, and supports initiatives aimed at enhancing ESS availability, reliability, and overall financial outcomes.
In addition to core responsibilities, the role will also contribute to technology assessments and strategic evaluations of emerging lowcarbon solutions, including green hydrogen, green ammonia, methylcyclohexane (MCH), and other green molecules.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Capability Development
- AI-enabled diagnostics, and operational performance matters.
- Provide mentorship to strengthen technical competency in ESS systems, battery behaviour, and data-driven/AI-assisted performance engineering.
- Support regional Markets by contributing to ESS-focused technical training and capabilitybuilding programs, including uplift in digital analytics and the use of AI-powered performance tools.
- Lead and coach ESS Performance Engineers, providing guidance on liability, optimization,
Governance & Standards
- (SoC) behavior, degradation patterns, chargedischarge cycles, thermal management, and safety indicators using both conventional analysis and AI-driven insights.
- Drive implementation of performance KPIs and coordinate ESS performance improvement programs across global Markets.
- Establish, maintain, and continuously refine technologyspecific performance benchmarks for ESS assets.
- Support the standardization of ESS monitoring dashboards, analytics platforms, and AI-enhanced reporting formats to improve visibility and early-warning capabilities.
- Provide guidance to Markets to ensure consistent adoption of corporate ESS standards, safety protocols, and operational governance frameworks.
- Oversee ESS operational performance metrics, including State of Health (SoH), State of Charge
Business Support
- Identify performance deviations, efficiency losses, abnormal cycling behaviour, and early signs of degradation across ESS assets using both engineering analysis and AI anomalydetection techniques.
- Conduct rootcause investigations and recommend actionable improvement plans, leveraging data science and predictive analytics where relevant.
- Analyze BMS, EMS, and SCADA data trends to detect emerging risks and recommend preventive measures, including the use of AIbased condition monitoring models.
- Lead ESS performance enhancement initiatives by applying global best practices, digital tools, and AIenabled optimization methodologies.
- Collaborate with Markets and corporate teams on crossfunctional performance enhancement, lifecycle improvement, and digital transformation projects.
- Conduct Level 2 (L2) audits to ensure compliance with project delivery, asset performance standards, and O&M processes.
- Support the evaluation of emerging ESS technologiesincluding LFP/NMC chemistries, flow batteries, hybrid systems, advanced BMS/EMS solutions, and AIdriven control or optimization platforms.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical ESS concepts clearly.
- Strong analytical capability with experience in handling battery and system-level datasets.
- Minimum 5 years in ESS engineering, renewable energy operations, power systems, or related energy sectors.
- Experience in ESS operations, BMS/EMS architecture, degradation modelling or power system integration is ideal.
- Familiarity with grid-forming (GFM) BESS application
- Demonstrated experience in deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for large Commercial & Industrial (C&I) facilities.
- Familiarity with applicable grid codes, interconnection standards, and utility requirements related to BESS deployment.
- Experience with HMA, HAZOP, FMEA, or root-cause analysis will be a plus.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Energy Storage or relevant engineering fields.
- Proactive, resourceful and strong in execution and troubleshooting.
- Occasional travel required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with EMS/BMS platforms, Power BI, Python/MATLAB, or power system modelling tools is a plus.
