Job Description

Duties

We are seeking a hands-on, highly motivated Maker Coach to support and grow our dynamic Maker Education programme for RI students. The Maker Coach plays a vital role in maintaining and preparing materials, as well as teaching students foundational and advanced analogue and digital making skills. The ideal candidate is resourceful, enthusiastic about learning-by-doing, and passionate about cultivating creative confidence in young people.

Inventory and Material Management

  1. Maintain an organised, well-stocked inventory of maker materials, tools, and equipment
  2. Monitor consumables and place timely orders to ensure readiness for all programmes
  3. Coordinate safe storage and recycling of used or leftover materials

Programme Preparation

  1. Prepare materials, tools, and resources for classes and maker projects in collaboration with the Maker Education team
  2. Ensure all tools and equipment are in working condition coordinate repair or servicing when needed
  3. Ensure learning environments have been set up and cleaned before and after sessions

Coaching and Teaching

  1. Teach students how to use a wide range of tools and materials, including analogue skills (e.g. safe cardboard cutting, basic woodworking) and digital tools (e.g. 3D printing, laser cutting)
  2. Support students in developing safe and effective making practices
  3. Manage and provide technical support for hands-on maker workshops, challenges, and long-term projects
  4. Provide technical support, encouragement, and just-in-time instruction to students
  5. Create a positive and inclusive maker culture that celebrates experimentation, iteration, and reflection

Job Requirements

  • Experience working in a makerspace, Fab Lab, or STEM/Maker education setting preferred
  • Background in design, engineering, education, or a related field
  • First aid certification and/or experience with Fab Lab / workshop safety protocols (preferred but not essential)

Technical and Making Skills

  • Proficiency in a range of analogue making tools (e.g. utility knives, saws, glue guns) and digital fabrication tools (e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters)
  • Familiarity with basic CAD and design software (e.g. SketchUp, Fusion 360, Adobe Illustrator) to troubleshoot 3D printing jobs is an advantage
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain maker tools and equipment

Organisational Skills

  • Strong logistical planning skills for managing materials, tools, and equipment across multiple programmes
  • Ability to set up efficient systems for storage, labelling, and safety

Coaching and Interpersonal Skill

  • Ability to build strong rapport with secondary school students approachable and patient
  • Comfortable guiding students through open-ended challenges and failures
  • Clear communicator and collaborative team member

This is a 2-year contract (renewable).
