MainPurpose of Job:

The Head ofOutdoor Education and Experiential Learning (OEd) at SJI International leads ateam of outdoor education specialists in designing and delivering an inspiringoutdoor education curriculum for students from grade 7 to 12. The role alsosupports the planning of experiences for students from K-6.[1] At St Joseph's Institution International allstudents take part in these experiences as they are considered part of thecurriculum and central to the holistic education offered at the school.

The purposeis to lead and support the continuous development of a progressive whole-schoolOutdoor Education Programme for students across Grades 7-12 and strengthen theprofile of OE as a core characteristic of the SJI International educationprogramme. The post holder will work collaboratively with the Service LearningCoordinator and CASL Coordinator to deliver enriching opportunities for allstudents.

MainResponsibilities and Duties:

The positionrequires the management and progression of a whole school outdoor educationcurriculum, ensuring rigorous safety and risk management. Key duties include:

. managing on-campus outdoor education, offsitewithin Singapore, and overseas expeditions. The latter often requires theability to work with the providers of adventure in the SE Asian region.

. Strategic Leadership: Directs the grade 7 to12 Outdoor Education department, ensuring alignment with the school's missionand values.

. Curriculum Development: Creates, oversees, andsequences age appropriate and inspiring experiences. These are designed topromote the character development of the students and complement the holisticnature of the whole school curriculum. This includes leading a coordinated andprogressive Outdoor Education programme across the whole High School, anddesigning and preparing teaching programmes and resources for all students fromGrade 7-12.

. Promotion of the value of outdoor educationand its ability to provide a tremendous opportunity to develop young persons ina relatively short period of time, building resilience, confidence, leadership,understanding of others and a passion for the outdoors to name a few. The Headwill promote Outdoor Education as one of SJI International's core pillars oflearning and encourage staff and students to participate.

. Successful Expedition Management: Oversees allaspects of the outdoor education programme, including planning, logistics,generic and dynamic risk management, and control measures. Keeps and respondsto accident, incident and near miss records. This includes takingresponsibility for the planning and delivery of local and overseas expeditionsfor Grade 7-12, leading Challenge Week with support from the Head of CASL,carrying out reconnaissance/inspection visits to activity venues, and liaisingwith vendor staff.

. Safety and Compliance: Understands theimportance of internationally recognised standards in outdoor education and howthey can be applied in a region that is often lacking in national standards andguidelines. The Head will follow and maintain all Safeguarding, Health &Safety requirements and Standard Operating Procedures, and produce RiskAssessments for all OE activities, working closely with ISOS in the planningphase.

. Child Safeguarding: Ensures that childsafeguarding measures are suitable and in line with the school protocols forall overseas expeditions.

. Team Leadership: Manages a team of outdoorspecialists. This includes planning, leading and delivering training to OutdoorEducation staff where qualifications and experience enable, and meetingregularly with OE leaders.

. Integration: Works with academic staff toconnect outdoor learning to the whole school curriculum, including developingand implementing specific cross-curricular learning modules to maximise studentlearning.

. Coordinate the NYAA - National YouthAchievement Award. International equivalents include the DoE and IA.Responsibilities include planning and delivering all criteria associated withthe Silver and Gold NYAA programme, and ensuring all NYAA students areeffectively reflecting and achieving the relevant criteria.

. Site Visits and Third Party ProviderAssessments - demonstrates experience of these assessments.

. General Administration: Oversee the purchaseand management of all Outdoor Education resources and equipment, maintain andupdate trip and equipment budgets, and evaluate the impact and effectiveness ofOE opportunities at each grade level.

. It is a requirement of the post -holder towork flexibly including evening, overnight, weekend and holiday activities,trips and expeditions. There will be no additional payment or time off in lieufor overnight trips, which are an inherent aspect of working in the field ofOutdoor Education.

Requirements

. Anextensive experience in leading outdoor and other experiential learningprogrammes.

. Expertise and training in SuccessfulExpedition management including - Risk Assessments, Control Measures andgeneral compliance.

. Extremely strong leadership, communication andorganisational skills.

Knowledge andExperience

. Experience of planning and leading NYAA or Dof E programmes.

. Experience in developing a whole school OEprogramme.

. Ability to forge a network of contacts to growthe whole school OE programme.

. Knowledge of safeguarding issues in a schoolenvironment.

Qualifications

A combinationof these will be required - it is understood that this subject has manyspecialisms and the candidate will require a high level of qualification issome of the following:

. Advanced First Aid Training (WAFA/ WFR) isessential.

. Child Safeguarding training.

. A range of outdoor instructors qualificationsand/ or experience. Internationally recognised outdoor qualifications in suchareas as mountain leadership, kayaking, sailing, white water rafting, diving,climbing, swift water rescue, surfing, personal survival/ lifeguarding andleading groups in remote regions.

. A degree in outdoor education.

. A teaching degree is preferable but notessential.
