The role holder is the Group's leading Subject Matter Expert on the risks emanating from the use of AI systems. This role sits in, and is a senior and highly influential role in, the second-line of defence. The role holder is responsible for setting and maintaining the Group's internal policy on managing AI risks, identifying the global minimum baseline at which to set the Group's AI policy and subsidiary standards, and providing risk SME advice and strategic direction to stakeholders on AI-related risk. This entails working with other second-line of defence teams (particularly across the Risk & Compliance, Financial Crime and Conduct Risks function) to oversee and advise the first line of defence on compliance with the requirements of the policy and its standards and on management of risks within appetite.

The purpose of this role is to enable the Group to safely use AI, at scale, in a competitive and fast-evolving landscape. This is a challenging, exciting and high-profile role providing strategic direction on management of AI risks at a time when the Group is significantly uplifting its AI aspirations and related resources.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Defining and maintaining in Group Policy and Standard(s) the global minimum control baseline for managing AI risks and complying with related regulatory or legal obligations
  • Enabling the First Line of Defence to define and implement a strategy for managing these risks within appetite and in support of the Group's business strategy, collaborating with colleagues across Risk and CFCR as appropriate
  • Interpreting the impact on the Group of trends in the external environment relating to AI, including in technology, regulatory expectations and industry best practice, and applying learnings from this to the Group Policy / Standards for which they are responsible

Business

  • Maintaining the Group Policy and related Standards for AI Risk
  • Providing subject-matter expert advice on the assessment and mitigation of all risks within their remit, and related regulatory compliance obligations
  • Awareness and understanding of the business contexts and strategies across the Group for the use of AI

Processes

  • Helping develop and enabling the execution of a regulatory advocacy strategy relating to the risks within their remit
  • Identifying the regulatory baseline for the Group Policy / Standards that they own, maintaining these documents in line with the regulatory baseline and industry best practice, maintaining any required obligations in accordance with the requirements of the Group Standard on Managing Regulatory Change
  • Providing subject-matter expert advice and guidance to internal clients to facilitate and support implementation of the Group Policy / Standards, including the requirements set out in these Group Policy / Standards
  • Providing subject-matter expert support and training materials to enable colleagues across the second line of defence to support the First Line of Defence in managing AI risks .

People and Talent

  • Leading through example and role modelling the Group's and Risk & CFCR's values, and reinforcing appropriate culture and values
  • Setting the appropriate tone and expectations from their team and working in collaboration with colleagues across the Second Line, and with the First and Third Lines of Defence
  • Ensuring that colleagues in their team are suitably skilled and qualified for their roles, and ensuring they receive ongoing training and development to remain competent, suitably skilled and qualified for their roles, with effective supervision in place to mitigate any risks
  • Assessing competency and skills of the team on an ongoing basis to ensure alignment of skill set to the risk management demands of the Risk & CFCR function, with succession planning for critical roles, and reviewing team structure/capacity plans
  • People Leadership and functional responsibility for team members, and supporting the Global Head, Data Conduct, CFCR in leading the wider Data & AI Risks team as a member of the Leadership Team
  • Setting, monitoring and maintaining job descriptions and objectives for any direct reports and providing feedback on a regular and timely basis, and rewarding in line with their performance against responsibilities and objectives
  • Promoting and embedding a culture of openness, trust and risk awareness, where ethical, legal, regulatory and policy-compliant conduct is the norm
  • Facilitating an environment where forward-planning, prioritisation, deadline management and streamlined workflows and collaborative, inclusive yet effective and efficient work practices, are the norm

Risk Management

  • Enabling and driving a superior risk culture for managing AI risks across all three Lines of Defence
  • Providing risk subject-matter expert input and advice into the creation of any risk appetite metric, and supporting the monitoring of the Group against such metric(s)
  • As risk subject-matter expert, providing strategic direction and input from a second line perspective to any transformation programmes set up to manage AI risks
  • Actively monitoring and challenging the Group's inherent and residual risk profile AI risk including by reviewing the outcomes from any key control metrics
  • Escalating to and making recommendations to risk committees any areas of concern relating to the Group's risk profile for AI risks. Make recommendations for improvements/changes based on the developed insights
  • Advising on appropriate questions for the First Line to assess its inherent risk exposure through, for example, the Risk & Control Self-Assessments (RCSA) exercise. Collaborate with colleagues in Risk & CFCR in reviewing and challenging the outcomes of any RCSA or other risk assessment exercise
  • Identifying, assessing and escalating franchise-level or Group-significant risks and control weaknesses, ensuring timely remediation and management engagement through the relevant committees
  • Escalating serious regulatory breaches or risk appetite breaches to senior management and regulators, as required
  • Supporting proactive identification, assessment and dissemination of evolving regulatory changes and associated risks
  • Ensuring necessary risk management reporting (MI) and tracking mechanisms are in place
  • Ensuring early identification and remediation of caps or breaches in permissions coverage, with root cause analysis and lessons learned
  • Supporting Audit/Assurance reviews relating to AI risk, as required.

Governance

  • Partnering with colleagues in Risk & CFCR to monitor and assess the effectiveness of the Group's arrangements to deliver effective governance, oversight and controls in the business and, if necessary, oversee changes in these areas
  • Maintaining an expert-level of understanding of applicable regulatory and industry frameworks and the regulatory requirements and expectations relevant to the role
  • Maintaining an aggregated, franchise-wide view of the Group's profile and exposure to AI Risks and related compliance obligations, to inform the Risk Framework Owner.

Regulatory and Business Conduct

  • Displaying exemplary conduct and live by the Group's Values and Code of Conduct.
  • Promoting the culture and practice of Risk & CFCR standards (including conducting business within regulatory requirements, and to high ethical standards) across the Group
  • Taking personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across the Group. This includes understanding and ensuring compliance with, in letter and spirit, all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and the Group Code of Conduct & Ethics
  • Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters
  • Leading the AI risks team, and supporting the Global Head, Data & AI Risks, CFCR in leading the wider team to achieve the outcomes set out in the Group's Conduct Principles

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Industry recognised qualification on AI risk management
  • 10 years+ experience in compliance, risk management, data or technology within a complex, global financial institution
  • Deep understanding of and subject-matter expertise in AI risks and related regulatory obligations and industry frameworks across multiple jurisdictions and their application to wholesale and/or retail banking activities
  • Strong commercial acumen and the ability to translate changes in technology and/or regulatory requirements into business-friendly internal standards and solutions
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, particularly with senior front-line leaders
  • Knowledge of the Bank's businesses and products
  • Proven ability to design and implement strategic frameworks and governance for complex regulatory obligations
  • Strategic vision for the function
  • Ability and experience in managing geographically dispersed teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate and work dynamically across country, cluster, business and group stakeholders
  • Understanding of best practice risk management techniques and frameworks
