Job Description:

The intern will play an integral role in supporting the Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Programme, which encompasses Colorectal, Esophageal/Gastric, and Hepatobiliary cancers.

Working closely with three GI Case Managers – GI Care Coordinator, Colorectal Case Manager, and Young-Onset GI and Upper GI Case Manager.

The intern will gain broad, hands-on exposure to the full spectrum of GI oncology care. This includes clinical database management, care pathways implementation, tumour-board coordination, patient navigation, and survivorship support. The intern will have the opportunity to observe and support patient-facing activities alongside multidisciplinary clinical teams, developing both technical and interpersonal competencies in a real-world oncology setting.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Database Management & Data Quality (Primary Scope)

• Review clinical data from EPIC (demographics, cancer type, staging, treatment, and follow-up outcomes)
• Perform data audits and validation to identify duplicates, missing entries, and inconsistencies
• Liaise with Case Manager to clarify and resolve data quality issues, ambiguous or incomplete information

Learning outcome: Ability to interpret and manage real-world clinical data in an oncology setting, with an understanding of data governance and registry management.

2. Care Pathway Support

• Observe and support the documentation and updating of care pathway materials
• Support creation and maintenance of SOPs related to care pathway workflows

Learning outcome: Understanding of how structured care pathways support patient navigation, clinical decision-making, and service continuity in oncology.

3. Tumour Board Coordination & Shadowing

• Assist with preparation and organisation of case materials for Tumour Board sessions
• Attend Tumour Board meetings as an observer, gaining exposure to multidisciplinary discussions across surgery, oncology, radiology, and pathology

Learning outcome: Appreciation of the multidisciplinary approach to cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning, and the coordination work that underpins these meetings.

4. Patient Screening & Navigation Support

• Administer health questionnaires to First Visit and young-onset GI cancer patients to assess psychosocial and functional well-being
• Help identify patients requiring referrals to allied health professionals or social workers, and facilitate these under supervision

Learning outcome: Understanding of holistic patient care, psychosocial screening tools, and the role of case managers in supporting patients through their cancer journey.

5. Survivorship Discharge Support

• Assist in preparing survivorship discharge documentation and materials
• Gain exposure to the transition of patients from active treatment to community-based follow-up care

Learning outcome: Understanding of cancer survivorship frameworks and the importance of structured discharge planning in supporting long-term patient well-being.

Job Requirements:

• Students currently pursuing a degree in Public Health, Healthcare Management, Life Sciences, Psychology, or related fields are preferred.
• Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and organisational skills, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in healthcare service improvement and patient engagement.
• Good communication and documentation writing skills are essential.
• Candidates must exercise professionalism and maintain strict confidentiality when handling clinical and patient information and should be meticulous and accurate in data extraction and entry.
