[What the role is]
This is a 2-year contract position as a Designer in The Sandbox.
[What you will be working on]
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Project Management :
- manage design projects from concept through to completion, ensuring high-quality outcomes and adherence to deadlines.
- Collaborate with students, faculty, and researchers to understand their needs and translate them into effective design solutions.
Design & Development:
- Create detailed design plans, sketches, prototypes, and final products using a range of tools and technologies, including CAD software, 3D printing, and traditional craftsmanship.
- Stay current with emerging design trends, materials, and technologies, incorporating them into projects as appropriate.
Innovation & Strategy:
- Drive innovation by exploring new design methodologies, tools, and processes that enhance the Makerspace's offerings.
- Develop and implement design strategies that align with the Institute's goals and objectives.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Foster a collaborative environment by working closely with cross-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.
- Present design concepts and project updates to diverse audiences, including students, faculty, and Institute leadership.
Facilities & Resources Management:
- Manage the maintenance and optimal use of design equipment and tools within the Makerspace.
- Ensure that resources are used efficiently and that safety protocols are followed.
Community Engagement:
- Lead workshops, seminars, and other events to promote design thinking and engage the NP community.
- Act as a liaison between the Makerspace and external partners, including industry professionals and local organizations.
[What we are looking for]
- At least 3 years of relevant experience, with a good knowledge of physical science, design or its equivalent are preferred.
- Should have knowledge/skills in mechanics and electronics e.g., handling mechanical workbench tools, 3D printing, laser cutting, craftsmanship preferably with some experience with prototyping and trouble shooting.
- Must possess teaching or coaching experience, good decision making and communication skills. In addition, he/she must be adaptable, detail-oriented and a team player.
Additional Pre-requisites That Are Advantageous
- Knowledge of concepts in science/technology (mainly physical / mechanical / electrical) and the ability to apply such knowledge in practical, engineering-type work is a plus.
- Those with computer literacy in programming or CAD and knowledge of safe lab management practices will have an added advantage.
