Job Summary:
As a Design Engineer (Mechanical), you will be responsible for mechanical engineering work for our AFL line of Fiber-Optic telecommunication products (e.g. cable harness and assemblies, connectors, panels, cabinets and accessories). The work-scope includes product design, check & optimization, integration, industrialization, life-cycle management/sustaining engineering etc.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical design and development of product functions and modules to meet user and business requirements, compliance, quality and cost.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders such as Quality, Product Management, Solution Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain functions as well as End-user/Customers etc.
- Translate up-stream user/system requirements as well as applicable industry standards (e.g. IEC, EN, GR) into measurable down-stream technical design requirements
- Support Commercial/Sales team through generation of concept designs and presentations for pitch to customers
- Identification of potential Intellectual Property (IP) conflicts in design and taking steps to avoid infringement, as well as drafting/filing of Patents for IP Protection
- Create test & verification plans for the developed/designed elements and parts
- Interface with manufacturing team and/or external suppliers for product industrialization
- Support Quality incidents and lead effort in failure analysis/troubleshooting
- Develop solution in support of manufacturing & quality improvement
- Generate documentation, including engineering reports, BOM, technical drawings, design specifications, installation guides for users etc.
Main Requirements:
- 3-5 years of work experience in product engineering design/development and transfer to manufacturing
- Bachelor's in Engineering (Diploma in engineering with at least 7 years experience in product engineering design may be considered)
- Conversant in both English & Mandarin (spoken and written)
- Proficient in CAD Software for 2D drawing and 3D Model application (Solidworks preferred)
- Familiar with Product & CAD Lifecycle Management workflow processes and tools (e.g. Solidworks PDM, PTC Windchill etc..)
- Conversant with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards (e.g. ASME Y14.5)
- Knowledge and competence in stack tolerancing, mechanical design analysis and validation based on theoretical calculation (e.g. stress and deformation)
- Knowledge of common industrial plastics, as well as experience in designing parts for plastic injection molding
- Knowledge of common industrial metals, as well as experience in designing parts for using standard metal fabrication & forming processes (e.g. CNC machining, sheet metal deep-drawing & stamping)
- Knowledge in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA)
- Experience in the following areas will be added advantage: (1) Data-center, or Fiber-Optic telecommunication Cable industry, (2) Design of connector products for Mass Manufacturing, (3) Design of cable harness and assemblies, (4) Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), (5) Finite Element simulation tools (e.g. Solidworks Simulation, ANSYS Mechanical), (6) Knowledge of statistical methods and Six-Sigma techniques (e.g. DOE, GR&R, SPC, Cpk analysis), (7) Process of drafting/application for patents and identifying potential IP conflicts
Other Important Notes:
- This role is based in Singapore AFL office
- Candidate will be working with a global team (i.e. North and South America, Europe, UK, APAC)
- As this role requires frequent interactions with international customer and counterparts, candidate must be able to accommodate work calls and meetings outside normal office hours (due to time-zone differences)
- International travel may be required
- Candidate is expected to be able to work independently as well as exercise initiative and pro-activeness in driving projects and time-lines
