Data Centre Technician

Job Summary

The Data Centre Technician provides hands-on operational support for data centre infrastructure, ensuring the availability, reliability, and security of IT and network systems. This role is responsible for hardware installation and maintenance, asset and capacity management, vendor coordination, and on-site support for planned changes and incidents in a 247 data centre environment.

Key Responsibilities

Data Centre Operations & Hardware Support

  • Perform installation, move, add, change, and decommission (IMACD) of IT equipment, including servers, network devices, storage, and backup systems.
  • Provide hardware break/fix support, including component replacement (HDD/SSD, memory, mainboard, SFP modules) and module reseating.
  • Connect, disconnect, and manage structured cabling and patching within the data centre.
  • Conduct regular physical and visual inspections of equipment and data centre facilities.
  • Provide on-site support during scheduled power-down and power-up activities.
  • Support POP site operations and standby coverage as required.

Systems & Network Support

  • Perform basic Linux system installation and troubleshooting.
  • Diagnose and resolve IT and network-related hardware and connectivity issues.

Inventory, Capacity & Documentation Management

  • Maintain accurate data centre operations (DCO) inventory records and perform regular asset cycle counts.
  • Manage rack, space, power, and cooling allocations for new installations and relocations.
  • Track and report data centre capacity, including space, power, cooling, and patch panel port availability.
  • Update documentation for structured cabling, materials, and newly installed equipment.

Vendor, Access & Change Management

  • Coordinate and escort vendors, ensuring compliance with data centre policies and procedures.
  • Manage data centre access requests and site entry controls.
  • Adhere to incident and change management processes, supporting scheduled moves, changes, and maintenance activities.
  • Provide regular status and progress reports on operational tasks and change requests.

Operational Support

  • Participate in after-hours, on-call, and shift work as required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and operational best practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support data centre operations.

Role Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in data centre operations or a similar infrastructure support role.
  • Solid understanding of structured cabling systems, patching standards, and data centre best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with server and network hardware installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Basic knowledge of Linux systems and network fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with data centre space, power, and cooling concepts.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation skills, and ability to follow change and incident management procedures.
  • Willingness to work shifts, on-call rotations, and after-hours support when required.
