Job Description
Job Summary
Monitor and optimize vessel operating costs within ship management, providing detailed financial analysis and partnering with operational teams to drive cost control, budgeting, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Monitor vessel operating costs daily, analyzing crew, maintenance, consumables, insurance, fuel, and food expenses to ensure accurate cost tracking
- Conduct detailed variance analysis between standard daily costs and actual expenses at vessel, cost item, and status levels
- Review purchase order modules monthly, tracking open orders, invoices, and unmatched purchase orders with operational teams
- Monitor Variation Orders rigorously for analytical tracking and contract/project recharge accuracy
- Produce clear, concise financial analyses explaining cost variances to support informed decision-making
- Challenge operational teams on financial performance by providing credible, solution-oriented insights
- Participate in management reviews and assist in budget arbitration preparation with qualitative reporting on deviations
- Propose corrective actions and cost optimization strategies based on financial insights
- Collaborate with accounting to ensure accurate accrual recording aligned with operational activities during monthly closing
- Secure appropriate provisioning levels by confirming commitments and completeness of expenses each month
- Ensure high-quality, reliable financial reporting with detailed analytical segmentation
- Maintain compliance with cost management standards and procedures
- Lead vessel budget preparation with operational departments, ensuring forecast completeness and consistency
- Flag exceptional expenses or budget risks proactively during annual budget and forecasting exercises
- Improve standard cost accuracy through ongoing feedback and analysis
- Contribute to enhancements in tools, reporting, and processes for operational cost control
- Support knowledge sharing and dissemination of best practices within the team
Required competencies and certifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or equivalent
- 5-8 years of experience in operational controlling, preferably in maritime or related industries
Preferred competencies and qualifications
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP systems, preferably Oracle
- Strong accounting and analytical control capabilities
- Proven ability to produce reports and KPIs for operational cost management
- Effective business partnering and leadership skills
- Clear communication and synthesis of complex financial data
- Solution-oriented mindset with ability to work autonomously under pressure
