Job Description

Ever sent a friend a 3-minute voice note about a bowl of bak chor mee Okay. Keep reading.

SETHLUI.com has been writing about food in Singapore since 2013. Hawker stalls, omakase counters, the new cafe with a one-hour Saturday queue. We also run a lifestyle section covering events, festivals product launches and news. We want interns who write for readers first. Search rankings come after.

Pick your lane:

Food: You'll eat. A lot. Then you'll tell people honestly whether it was worth it, including when it was mid.

Lifestyle: You'll cover events, festivals, how-to guides and the latest lifestyle trends and exciting changes our SG life.

Tell us which one when you apply. Want to try both Also can.

What you'll do

  • Visit stalls, restaurants and venues, take notes and photos, then turn them into articles that sound like a person wrote them
  • Write guides and listicles people actually use. That means checking every place is still open before it goes in
  • Pitch your own stories. New openings, closures, the hawker with a backstory nobody's written yet
  • Work through edits with our editors. Expect a lot of red ink early on. That's where you get better
  • Handle the SEO basics (titles, meta descriptions, internal links) without letting them flatten your writing
  • Help the social and video team with captions and scripts when needed

What we're looking for

  • You write like yourself. Your samples should sound like you, not a template
  • You have opinions about food or lifestyle stuff and can explain why
  • You're okay walking up to a shop owner, introducing yourself and asking questions
  • You fact-check by reflex. Wrong opening hours mean someone travels across the island for a closed shutter
  • Available for at least 3 months, 5 work days a week
  • Currently studying or recently graduated. Any field. Journalism or mass comm helps but isn't required

Bonus points

  • You speak Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Malay or Tamil. Very useful when uncle doesn't want to answer in English
  • You can take a decent phone photo of a plate of food
  • You've used WordPress
  • You drink alcohol

What you get

  • Your own byline on published work
  • Monthly allowance of [$800-$1200]
  • Proper editorial feedback, not just looks good
  • Toa Payoh office + hybrid arrangement
