Role Overview
As a Commodities Trading Intern, you will supportthe trading desk and commercial teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Youwill gain hands-on exposure to physical and/or financial commodity markets,market analysis, risk management, logistics, and contract execution. The roleblends analytical work, data handling, customer interaction (in some programs),and operational support. It is designed to build foundational knowledge ineconomics, supply-demand dynamics, hedging, and decision-making under uncertainty.
This internship often serves as a pipeline tofull-time roles in trading, analytics, or operations.
KeyResponsibilities
- Conduct market research and analysis: Monitor commodity price trends, supply and demand fundamentals, geopolitical events, weather impacts, and economic indicators.
- Analyze and compile daily/weekly market reports, charts, and dashboards (using tools like Excel, Bloomberg, or internal platforms).
- Support traders with data collection, updating trading systems, and preparing trade recommendations or risk assessments.
- Assist in contract execution: Help initiate, negotiate (under supervision), and document purchase/sale contracts, including terms for price, quantity, quality, transportation, timing, and payment.
- Coordinate logistics and operations: Track shipments, verify documents (e.g., Bills of Lading), manage scheduling, and support portfolio optimization.
- Participate in risk management activities: Help monitor positions, calculate exposures, and assist with hedging strategies using futures, options, or swaps.
- Build and maintain relationships: Interact with internal teams (e.g., accountants, operations) and, in some programs, external stakeholders such as producers, elevators, mills, end-users, or processors.
- Work on special projects: Examples include back-testing trading strategies, data visualization (Power BI, Spotfire, etc.), supply chain analysis, or market fundamentals modeling.
- Shadow experienced traders and merchandisers to understand real-time decision-making in volatile markets.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and risk limits.
Daily tasks often include monitoring news feeds,updating spreadsheets, attending team meetings, and contributing to deal flow or reporting.
RequiredQualifications & Skills
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Agricultural Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field (preferably junior/senior status or recent graduate).
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, charts) is essential knowledge of Python, R, SQL, or data visualization tools is a plus.
- Basic understanding of financial markets, derivatives (futures/options), and/or physical commodity supply chains.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) for preparing reports and interacting with teams.
- High attention to detail, ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, and strong problem-solving abilities.
- Team player with a proactive, results-oriented attitude and eagerness to learn.
- Availability for full-time commitment during the internship period some roles may require occasional overtime during market volatility.
PreferredQualifications
- Prior internship or coursework in trading, risk management, logistics, or agriculture/energy markets.
- Familiarity with commodities (energy, metals, ags) or trading platforms.
- Language skills (e.g., Mandarin, English, Malay, Tamil) for international trading desks.
- Knowledge of statistical modeling or programming for quantitative roles.
