Chief Engineer

Scope

Required Qualification: Marine Engineer Officer Class 4 / Class 5 Special Limit (Sailing experience)

Working Hours: Monday - Friday (0745-1745)

Location: On board vessel

As Chief Engineer of the craft your responsibilities and authority with particular reference to safety and pollution prevention include:

Duties and Responsibility

1. In full charge of all machinery and electrical installations on board and responsible for their proper functioning.

2. Familiarizing yourself with the company's policy on safety and pollution prevention and company's safety management system.

3. Familiarizing yourself with the relevant sections of the procedures manual.

4. Familiarizing yourself with official maritime circulars concerning safety and pollution prevention

5. Seeing to it that the relevant work instructions are effectively carried out.

6. Making sure that new engineers and crew understand the operating procedures of machinery and equipment relevant to their duties.

7. Knowing your craft in detail, including the propulsion and control systems, directional control system, the electrical installations and equipment, anti-pollution equipment, all piping systems, its safety equipment, alarm systems and damage control system.

8. Personally checking the propulsion and other machinery at start-up, regularly during operation and after shutting down and also checking and engine log book.

9. Seeing to it that the daily and periodical inspections are carried out in accordance with the relevant work instructions, and that safe working practice is followed.

10. Seeing to it that the preventive maintenance of machinery is carried in accordance with the relevant work instructions.

11. Ensuring that there is always sufficient fuel and lubricants on board. Updating records of consumption.

12. Carrying out minor repairs on board and keeping the company informed, through the master, of any major repairs and defects requiring attention by shore staff.

13. Ensuring that proper engineering watches are kept when underway and in port and be on duty on the bridge for bridge controlled machinery or in the engine room or its vicinity.

14. Giving clear and appropriate orders and instructions verbally supplemented by written instructions if necessary.

15. Reviewing with the relevant sections of the procedures manual and work instructions identifying any non-conformities and reporting them to DPA.

16. Ensuring that no oil is pumped into the sea and that oil residues and sludge are disposed of properly to shore facilities.

17. Ensuring that all engineering refuse is properly disposed ashore.

18. Participating in safety and emergency drills on board.

19. Reporting to the master any potential hazards identified on the craft.
