CHIEF DATA SCIENTIST (Research & Development - Railway Operation Optimization)

Hitachi Asia Ltd., a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., serves as the regional headquarters for Southeast Asia and supports innovation across social infrastructure and digital solutions. As part of Hitachi's commitment to advanced railway systems and smart mobility, we are seeking a Chief Data Scientist to strengthen our Research & Development capabilities in railway operation optimization.

Position Overview

The Chief Data Scientist is responsible for conducting and leading research that addresses customer challenges, as well as creating advanced technologies, solutions, and business models related to railway operation optimization.

This role contributes to Hitachi's strategic, financial, and operational objectives by driving innovation in railway operations, enhancing service reliability and efficiency, and translating research outcomes into practical, customer-ready solutions. The position requires close collaboration with global research teams, internal stakeholders, and external partners across the railway value chain.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct research activities and develop advanced technologies and solutions for railway operation optimization.
  • Define and create short-term and long-term research strategies, including service design and business models.
  • Plan and execute Proof of Concept (PoC) activities to demonstrate solution value through real-world railway applications.
  • Engage in customer-facing activities, including requirement studies and solution proposals.
  • Prepare proposal documents, presentation materials, and technical reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with global research teams, and other internal and external parties to develop and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and thought leadership in railway operation optimization initiatives.
  • Support knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across R&D teams.

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or PhD.
  • Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant working experience in railway operation optimization.
  • Working experience in service design and customer-facing activities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong hands-on capability in human flow simulation, operation optimization, and digital twin technologies.
  • Deep knowledge of railway operations and incident management.
  • Knowledge of AI / Machine Learning, data analytics, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, and AnyLogic.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
