Chartering Manager (Tankers)

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Chartering Manager to lead the commercial employment and performance of a tanker fleet. The successful candidate will identify cargo opportunities, negotiate profitable fixtures and develop strong relationships with charterers, brokers, traders and cargo interests.

This position requires solid tanker-market knowledge, strong commercial judgement and the ability to manage vessel employment, voyage economics and market exposure within approved risk parameters.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and execute chartering strategies to maximise fleet utilisation, earnings and commercial performance.

• Market available tanker tonnage and identify suitable cargo opportunities across targeted trading regions.

• Negotiate and conclude voyage charters, time charters, Contracts of Affreightment and other commercial arrangements.

• Prepare and assess voyage estimates, freight calculations, bunker costs and expected voyage returns.

• Review and negotiate Charter Party terms, fixture recaps and rider clauses.

• Monitor tanker freight markets, vessel positions, cargo movements, bunker prices and competitor activity.

• Provide market intelligence, earnings forecasts and commercial recommendations to senior management.

• Maintain strong relationships with oil majors, traders, charterers, brokers and other cargo interests.

• Develop new customers and pursue longer-term commercial partnerships.

• Coordinate closely with vessel operations following fixture confirmation to ensure smooth voyage execution.

• Monitor voyage performance against approved estimates and investigate significant financial variances.

• Support the resolution of laytime, demurrage, performance and other Charter Party-related matters.

• Evaluate counterparty exposure and ensure fixtures comply with internal credit, sanctions and risk-management requirements.

• Work with technical, marine and operations teams to ensure vessel availability and suitability for prospective employment.

• Maintain accurate records of enquiries, offers, fixtures, vessel positions and commercial performance.

• Contribute to fleet-planning, budgeting and business-development activities.

• Represent the shipowner at customer meetings, industry events and other commercial engagements.

Requirements

• Diploma or degree in Maritime Studies, Shipping, Business or a related discipline.

• 5 to 10 years of experience in tanker chartering, shipbroking, trading or commercial shipping.

• Strong knowledge of crude, product or chemical tanker markets, depending on the assigned fleet.

• Proven experience negotiating and concluding tanker fixtures.

• Good understanding of Charter Party terms, voyage calculations, freight economics and post-fixture matters.

• Established relationships with tanker charterers, brokers, traders or cargo interests would be advantageous.

• Strong commercial judgement, numerical ability and negotiation skills.

• Able to make timely decisions and respond effectively to changing market conditions.

• Good understanding of counterparty risk, sanctions requirements and commercial controls.

• Capable of working independently while collaborating closely with operations, technical and management teams.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office and relevant voyage-estimation or shipping systems.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

• Willingness to travel when required.
