Job Description

Volt14 offers scalable, drop-in technology solutions to bring cutting-edge lithium-ion battery performance to mass-market applications. As we accelerate the development of high-energy and high-power solutions, we are looking for a highly capable Battery Cell Engineer to join our technical team in Singapore. You will lead cell design and development, SOP development, RFQ/RFI development, liaison with contract producers and vendors, and in-depth electrochemical analysis, and become our in-house resident expert on battery cells.

Responsibilities

  • Cell Design & Modeling: Lead the design and development of high-performance battery cells using a range of advanced input materials. Utilize first-principles quantitative modeling of mechanical, electrical and chemical phenomena to guide the design of various cell formats.
  • Prototyping & Design Validation: Plan and oversee the end-to-end prototyping of battery cells, ranging from coin cells to pouch and cylindrical formats, to validate and iterate cell designs.
  • Assembly & Process Execution: Actively execute cell assembly processes, including electrode winding, stacking, and electrolyte filling. Perform glovebox operations for sensitive material handling and assembly.
  • In-depth Electrochemical Analysis: Perform in-depth analysis of complex electrochemical testing data (e.g., cycling, rate capability, EIS) to infer physical phenomena of interest. Translate raw data into actionable insights for cell design iterations.
  • Post-Mortem Analysis: Lead the disassembly and forensic post-mortem analysis of various cell formats to identify failure modes and optimize performance.
  • Technical Support: Act as the in-house resident expert on cell design and electrochemistry, supporting the technical team in all tasks regarding the production and prototyping of cells. This includes the preparation of documentation for the maintenance, upgrades, and operation of laboratory and pilot-scale equipment, as well as supporting any future scale-up activities.
  • Third-Party Liaison: Handle and liaise all third-party interaction with contract producers and vendors, including all design, definition and preparation of detailed technical documentation.
  • Documentation: Prepare detailed technical reports, maintain precise lab records, and contribute to internal and external presentations.

Requirements

  • Direct Experience: Proven hands-on experience in the assembly of battery cells at a laboratory scale. Prior experience with at least pilot-scale production is a significant advantage.
  • Analytical Skills: Deep understanding of electrochemical data analysis (e.g., cycling, rate capability, EIS) and the ability to link data patterns to physical/chemical phenomena within the cell.
  • Productivity Tools: Mastery of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office. Proficiency in utilizing AI-based research and productivity tools is a must.
  • Educational Background: An undergraduate degree with at least 3 years of relevant work experience, or a Master's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Materials or related engineering discipline.
  • Startup Mindset: This role combines deep technical ownership with practical lab work. You must be comfortable working hands-on in the lab when required and thrive in a fast-paced startup environment requiring self-initiative.
